I've connected the 2 from the MIDI OUT on the E3 to the IN on the MK, set both to Ch.1, and here I was expecting some magic, but no joy. Somebody please help!

Layering sounds via MIDI
I'm a newbie to the Electro 3 and MIDI. I know that on the Stage 2 you can layer, for example, piano and pads, bringing the pads in and out with a pedal. Awesome. However, didn't have the bucks for a Stage 2! Saw on YouTube a guy basically doing the same thing on an Electro 3 using a separate synth for the pads connected via MIDI. I have a MicroKorg XL so I want to try this layering, but I just don't know where to start. I've seen on here someone uploaded a tutorial for Stage and MIDI. Anyone know if there is a similar tutorial for the E3?

That should work. Possibly a bad MIDI cable?

Hello Gbags,
Welcome to the forums.
I agree with anotherscott, it should be working.
Just because the MIDI cable is new, doesn't automatically dismiss the possibility of it being defective.
However, I would first check the MIDI routing setting of the MicroKorg XL (MKXL) according to page 59 of the manual
I would set this parameter to "MIDI only" instead of "MIDI+USB", or "USB". The MIDI+USB setting has some software based driver settings that can interfere with the MKXL's ability to receive MIDI over the 5 pin jack.
In the event that this isn't the problem,
I would test the cable by running from the NE3 MIDI Out back to the NE3 MIDI in and then turn the System Menu/ Local Control to Off.
This test sets the NE3 as a MIDI tone module that no longer responds directly to it's own keyboard, but instead responds to incoming MIDI signals.
In (Local Off) mode, the NE3 keyboard still sends MIDI to the MIDI output which comes back (via MIDI In) to control the tones therefor verifying that the MIDI cable is good or bad.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, Hanon

Hey i'm also running into the problem of getting the nord electro 3 because of the lack of pitch bend/modulation wheel control. Would you be able to send me the link? I'm just curious at how this was setup.

You can certainly get a second board that has pitch bend and mod wheel, and you can MIDI the two boards together to trigger one board's sounds from the other's keyboard, but the pitch bend and mod wheels will not affect the Nord sounds.
But the setup should be just as easy as described: MIDI cable OUT of the the keyboard you want to play IN to the other keyboard you want it to trigger.
You do need to make sure that both boards are set for the same MIDI channel (instructions are different for each board you might buy), but it usually works if you skip this step because most boards automatically send and receive on MIDI channel 1 by default.
