Just bought an SSV3

Postby jimmyjames » 10 Aug 2017, 03:31

WIll be using with my NE4. For those of you using Nords with these, have you noticed a benefit to modifying Nord EQ in a particular way especially for acoustic pianos? Any other advice on keyboard related adjustments...say adding compression for example? I've read most everything on placement options for the SSV3 to make it sound better so set with that. Thanks...

And for any advices on Nord amplification anyway, especially when it comes to A.Piano...

I briefly had the SS3, and while I didn't play Nord through it, I did play other piano sounds, and used my Yamaha mixing board's sweepable mid to get a better sound out of it... I felt it needed a 3 dB dip to get the piano sounding right, but I don't remember exactly at what frequency. And the Yamaha's "Q" (bandwidth for that control) doesn't necessarily match what Nord's EQ does anyway. But as a starting point, I'd suggest setting the Nord EQ gain to -3 and then slowly sweep through the Frequencies (I'd say in the 800Hz to 2k range) and see if there's a spot where you think it sounds best, and then use the Part Sel button to quickly compare your favorite spot to how it sounded "flat" to confirm that you did indeed make an improvement. Also, importantly, I set the SS3's onboard MF EQ knob to about 3:00 as well.

For live use, the least expensive one I found acceptable for A.Piano is the EV ZXa1, which also has the virtue of weighing only 19 lbs. If your budget can swing it, up from there would be the QSC K8.2 (which is a big improvement over the earlier K8), at about 28 lbs. Obviously, you'll need a pair if you want stereo. If it's for home/studio use rather than live, I'll defer to others for suggestion.
