Current go-to pianos are Grand Lady D and Amber Upright. Studio Grand 2 and Silver Grand see a bit less use. I like the Silver when I need a cutting sound, which is not very often.

You do not play in a cover-band with mighty guitar-players, I think!? (-:

The Grand Lady D's currency continues to be impressive. It's featured in all the newer Nords and it always gets a lot of votes on this forum. This despite the fact that it's an older sample and doesn't come in XL. Maybe we Americans just love our Steinways (although this sample could be from a Hamburg model).

Meanwhile, the Bosie and Italian seem to have faded on the charts like an old 80s synth band - and the Velvet never took off. We won't talk about the Bambino.

Jazz combos and big band only. I'm spared the luxury of rock guitarists. :keyboard2:

For me, it's not so much about the name, but the level of expression and the voice. The Lady D, Concert Grand 2 and Amber all have nice singing fundamentals throughout most of the range, and a decent level of expression. The bottom end is just rich enough. They pretty much cover my book.

I was never a fan of the Bosie; It has a thunderous, overtone heavy voice which is hard to control. The Fazioli has a similar voice, but less booming. I know a lot of people like it, but it's too "complex" for my needs. The Velvet is nice, but it's kind of lost in the library - other pianos can do what it does and then some.

The Bambino is nice, but I don't need that intimate sound for any thing.

While I don't use the other pianos for my purposes, I can certainly see how they appeal to different people for different reasons. It's great to see even the original Rain Piano get some love.

Luck-EEE. Not only are you not battling the latest overdrive pedal to be heard, but I'm betting your band isn't expecting you to sound like five different synths, an orchestra, a horn section, or that "really cool sound" on some benighted cover from the early-90s.

Someday I will just say "you get the acoustic, the Rhodes, or the Hammond. Take your pick, that's all folks."

This week I took my second shot at using Royal Grand (L), in Mono, in the covers band I play in. This time I boosted the treble up to about "2 o'clock". I actually got thru "Werewolves of London" without changing to the acoustic piano in my Roland synth module. The range of piano notes is all high in this song (I basically rip off a simple version of what's on the original, and there is nothing fancy here, since I am not much of a keys player). And I still use the Roland for acoustic piano parts which use lower notes. Nevertheless, this is the best I have experienced in using any Nord acoustic piano sound in mono, in my covers band.

The band expects me to sound like a piano player. If I throw in a Hammond or Rhodes sound for a tune, they are pleasantly surprised. One of the big bands does an arrangement of Chuck Mangione's "Bellavia". I used a phased Rhodes patch, and I was a hero.

Bit OT story: In the fusion band, we cover a Mike Stern tune called Upside Downside. The keyboard part in the original recording had these 80's types string pads, which I attempted to emulate, along with a grungy kind of guitar sound to double the bass line. Last week, my guitar player asked if I could just play a Rhodes patch in the tune, because he thinks it would sound better than that fake rock stuff. So even when I try, they DON'T want me doing that other stuff.

Yea, I'm very fortunate. I only work with two guitarists, and they are both true to form jazz guys. No egos or volume wars. I'm very lucky.

I found that the large sample version of the Silver Grand that I downloaded from the Nord Piano Library sounds great. I play classic rock and R & B and find that the Silver Grand has a lot of clarity and cuts through the mix of a loud band. I had to delete a sample to make room for it (I got rid of Italian Grand). Using Sound Manager I was able to automatically substitute the new sample for the old one in any of the patches that used Italian Grand in my Electro 5D.
