I tried a bunch of things last night based on the above ...
Since I have a USB 10-Port Hub, I have 1 USB Port free on the Mac; tried plugging the USB cable from the Nord direct to the Mac and BINGO Noise gone!!
Thanks to everyone for your helpful suggestions.

Re: High Pitched Whining Noise from USB
Good stuff, SG....those hubs are so handy, but I have noted that several device manuals recommend NOT using them...probably for that reason. I'm (we're) glad you found the problem. Resolutions to these sort of things benefits us all !

Re: High Pitched Whining Noise from USB
Hi friends,
Stumbled upon this forum because I was experiencing a high-pitch whine through my Nord Stage 2 EX when recording in my home studio (stereo quarter inches from back of Nord, into Apogee Quartet, into USB hub, into MacBook Pro). I also run MIDI via USB cable from the Nord (through same USB hub, into MacBook pro). All things needing power are in a Furman power conditioner.
I don't think I'll shed any more light on this issue, but would like to present some information that I learned today via my troubleshooting (hopefully this will help someone, or those who are much smarter than I can help diagnose, etc).
First, I ran the interface directly into the laptop (bypassing USB hub). The high-pitch whine continued.
Second, I unplugged the USB hub from the laptop. Sound disappeared. Plug the USB hub back in, the whine came back.
Next, I unplugged the USB cable from the back of the Nord (USB Hub still connected to laptop). Sound magically went away, clean signal just like I've always had. So I swapped out the USB cable. From the Nord to the USB hub with a new USB cable. The whine came back.
Then I plugged new USB cable directly from Nord into laptop (bypassing hub). The whine didn't reappear, but there was a noticeable change in "noise" in the lines. Back to a clean signal once USB cable was unplugged.
Next, I grabbed my M-Audio Uno (MIDI to USB cable). I plugged MIDI In and Out from the Nord, and then ran the USB cable through the USB hub. High-pitched whine was back.
I bypassed the USB hub again, plugged USB directly into laptop and the whine reappeared.
INTERESTINGLY, when I unplugged the MIDI IN cable in the back of the Nord, the whine disappeared and clean signal returned (with the MIDI Out cable still plugged in). I plugged them both in a few times and can confirm that it was the MIDI In cable that caused the whine to appear and disappear.
So. I have no freaking clue what any of that means. But, it seems like in my case:
- Apogee Quartet isn't the issue as I'm now getting perfectly clean audio from the Nord (and other mics, etc)
- USB Hub isn't the issue since the whine occurred at times even when the hub was bypassed
- The Nord USB port and MIDI In plugs are the culprit; as now that I am only running MIDI Out, plus the stereo 1/4" cables I have clean signal.
Draw your own conclusions here, and I don't have the time right now to dig in any deeper...but hopefully this will help someone.
Cheers!
