thanks for your help, I've decided to keep it, it's a great instrument.
one question, is the recent firmware midi pitch bend addition going to allow controlling pitch externally? i read the manual but this point i think is still obscure

Pitch bend can be controlled via midi.

Re: help: just purchased electro 5d 61...wrong choice?
I'm curious as to whether playing a solo lead from the samples synth section which requires pitch bending via joystick is actually achievable. and what type of pitch controllers are out there? perhaps pedals?

Hi I haven't got an electro as of yet (I stupidly sold my NS2 a year ago in a moment of madness ) but as I've an iPad I have synths on that. I'm hoping my plan to use the electro as a basic controller
Worth/possible solution if you have such a thing ?
Apologies if I'm talking out of my arse!!

What about another kbd connected via MIDI and use its wheel. Or if you are a fan of DIY, make your own with an Arduino board, or this: http://www.doepfer.de/we.htm

Re: help: just purchased electro 5d 61...wrong choice?
I'm a little confused as to what the following means, taken from the firmware changelog:
"Part Upper now supports MIDI Pitch Bend from external keyboard, when in MIDI Split mode."
would it be possible to play the upper part on the electro, possibly synth engine and just apply pitch bend from an external controller ( which is not used to emit sounds)?
would it be possible to

When in Midi Split Mode, the Part Upper is no longer controlled from the Nord keys, but from the external controller. You play the notes on the external controller and bend them from there.

Re: help: just purchased electro 5d 61...wrong choice?
sorry but I'm quite new to midi workflows pablo, so it seems it is actually impossible to pitch bend ne5 sounds when playing the ne5 keys.
in an ideal world I would love to just do that and use my smartphone as pitchbend controller by writing my own python android app and by using a midi to smartphone midi adapter.
but back in the real world
what i guess would be possible is playing the ne5 synth sounds on the lower keys and an external synth rack on the upper keys ( and pitch bend the ext synth sounds from the rack itself).
thanks again

The Nord won't do everything for you but it's the best keyboard out there, bar none. You won't regret the purchase.

wow! if you are writing PB apps for Android then midi will be a easy as cake for you once you spend a little time with it
but yes, your observation is correct -- it will not be possible to use PB on the Nord as you suggest; a 2nd keyboard would be needed. your second suggestion would work, though. an external rack module could take midi data feed from the Nord for purposes of note playing and your Android app could handle the PB duties. for this to work, however, you would have to figure out how to merge the two midi feeds (from Nord and from phone) into the rack module's midi input
not sure how accurately intuitive/responsive a touchscreen phone PB function would be....
emartin has a point and you will probably come to love that instrument, but best advice may be to gig that one for a while and set aside a portion of the earnings towards an upgrade to Stage model which would give you EVERYTHING you want and quite alot more
