Electro 5D Wooden end panels

Postby KEVBUK » 05 Dec 2016, 22:51

I am changing the appearance of my Electro 5d. I have bought slightly damaged wooden end panels and have carefully sanded them to bare wood. I will be using a very light woodstain with a waxed finish which will take knocks more readily than the gloss red originals. If I ever sell this lovely board, the unmarked original panels will go with it. Please, has anybody got any advice on how to change the panels. I have no idea on how to do this safely...............................??

The ends of my 5D have three screws holding them on. I assume you'd unscrew these?

Bad assumption. There are internal screws attaching the wooden end cheeks to the upper chassis. The entire upper chassis must be removed from the instrument to accomplish end cheek swaps. Best handled by someone who knows what she or he is doing.

Thanks Pablo. I have researched a little and found vids of earlier Electro stripdowns. Am I right in assuming one large screw underneath, all screws along top backside edge, tilt top panel up and carefully remove two ribbon connectors.................? I appreciate your comments.

yes, those are the basics, but you neglected to mention screws on sides, so here again:

1) single screw on bottom (which is not part of dual parallel line pattern)
2) all screws located on rear at seam between red upper chassis and black lower chassis
3) wooden sides: there is one screw up front and a vertical pair at the rear. Remove front screws and top screw of vertical pairs from both sides
4) loosen bottom screws of vertical pairs

now it is possible to lift upper chassis, with lower of vertical pair screws serving as hinge pins.
disconnect large ribbon between mainboard and panelboard, preferably from mainboard end
remove two bottom screws on sides
remove upper chassis entirely

now you can swap wooden sides and reassemble
