Electro 5D 73 midi setlist mode

Postby htevents » 28 Apr 2017, 17:08

Hello All,

With my band I use my Nord Electro 5D 73 and use the Setlist option to program my sounds for each songs. Now our gitarist started using a Kemper profiler, also with the option to program sounds for each song. My question is (I can't find it anywhere): Is the Nord sending midi change messages when turning the value dial (especialy in Setlist mode)? I don't have acces to midi log software to see what button/dial sends out midi.

Maybe you can help me with what I want to achieve: When I select a song in setlist mode on my Nord, I want the Kemper to select that song too (maybe we have to program the songs on the Kemper in the same order as on the Nord). Maybe with an external controller or something, but without the need of a computer (tablet/iPad would be fine). Is that possible and if yes, does anyone know how to do it?

Based on the manual, it looks like you can set your Nord either way (via a menu setting), i.e. to send MIDI Program Changes when you select different programs, or to not send them. See:
==============================
7 - PROGRAM CHANGE MODE affects how the
Nord Electro 5 handles Program Change MIDI
messages. Possible settings are Off, Send,
Receive or Send/Receive.
==============================
It sounds like the "Send" function you want here should certainly work in Program Mode, but it's an interesting question as to what it does in Set List mode. Does it consider the Set List "songs" to also be "programs" that generate Program Change? Or does it consider the slot selection within a song (which are, themselves, actual NE5D programs) to be the things that generate MIDI Program Changes? Or both? And if it sends a MIDI Program Change when you select a new Song from Set List mode, does that change correspond to the Song number, or does it correspond to the Program number of the program in that song's first slot (which is, IIRC, the sound that is enabled by default when you call up a new song)? I don't have the ability to check at the moment, but having elaborated on the variables, maybe this will make it easier for someone else to determine exactly what it's doing here.

Hi - I did a quick test of recording a change to Set List mode from the Nord to the Logic DAW program.

I was able to play back the control and program change successfully from Logic, first selecting Set List, then a particular Song in the Set list. This worked regardless of starting from Program mode or Live mode, and switching to Set List.

The screenshot attached shows the midi events when I first selected Set List mode (I was already in Program mode), then changed the Song from 17 to 18 (the numbers recorded differ by 1), and switched from Slot A to B then back to A. I'm not a midi expert so can't provide much explanation on the various midi parameters.

You don't say if the Kemper and the Nord are going to be connected somehow or if the midi change relies on independent controls on each device.
*Edit - from re-reading your post, I assume you will have the Kemper and Nord connected*

Have you already seen the posts on the Kemper forum, eg https://www.kemper-amps.com/forum/index.php/Thread/14402-Midi-Control-the-Kemper-advanced/.
Good luck with it - maybe if you can connect the two devices you can experiment with the effect of change programs from the Kemper.

Okay, so it looks like sending Program Change sill do exactly what the OP wants:

re: "Is the Nord sending midi change messages when turning the value dial (especialy in Setlist mode)?"

Yup.

re: "When I select a song in setlist mode on my Nord, I want the Kemper to select that song too (maybe we have to program the songs on the Kemper in the same order as on the Nord)."

Yes, you'd have to order the songs on the Kemper to be the same as on the Nord.

re: "without the need of a computer (tablet/iPad would be fine)."

The addition of a tablet/iPad would allow you to keep the song orders within the two units independent (you wouldn't have to have Nord song 17 call Kemper sound 17, you could have it call up something else, or nothing).

@JXrays: Thank you very much for testing and recording the events. I am not an expert on midi also, so even with your wonderfull screenshot I still have to do some digging and testing too, but this helped me a lot further. As I stated in a post in another topic, my plan is to use a tablet or, against my initial wish, a computer to program a setlist with the midi program change information for the Nord and if that works flawless also for the Kemper.

@anotherscott: Thanks for thinking with me and for your clear answers on my questions.

If someone can give me more detailed info about what channels, values, MSB and LSB settings I have to program, feel free to share your knowledge.
