Hi,
i am thinking about trying out some external effect pedals with my nord electro 5D, since I would like to get some more experimental sounds out of it. I already appreciate the onboard effects but would like to add something interesting to the sound.
What are your thoughts or experience on this? Thought about a boss ps -6 harmonist or a distortion pedal, also those panda pedals like red panda particle look promising.
regards

Re: Cool Effect Pedals to use
Maybe a fuzz? I haven’t tried it with my 5D yet, but Way Huge’s Swollen Pickle is a very versatile fuzz pedal. I got it for bass and guitar and then found it’s great with a Fender Rhodes, so might be interesting with the Nord EPs?

I am loving my Electro Harmonix V256. Midi in from E5 + mic in, turns me into a choir of angels

A bit off topic as I don't know what effects are being used here - and B3 purists may not like it - but for everyone else, Big Smoke's 'Time is Golden' is worth a listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNUQEoGBP7s

I've always been pretty happy with the onboard effects for the most part, but I have a Boss DD-7 on my pedalboard with an expression pedal for a wild pitch bending delay effect I get to use every so often. Also, the NEO ventilator...don't leave home without one.

Re: Cool Effect Pedals to use
I've been using several effects pedals with my Electros (3&4) over the years. Here are a bit of my experience.
- Tech 21 amp sims: more tweakable than the onboard ones. Sound good all in all. Love them!
- Some dirt boxes on Rhodes and Wurlies soudns, like the ProCo Deucetone and EHX Operation Overlord (both operating in stereo).
- At some point, I used the separate outputs setting in order to use a MoogerFooger MF-104Z delay on organs only.
- The MF-103 phaser is GREAT on Rhodes, really liquid.
Most of the time, I use the NE with a Little Phatty and a couple of pedals. So I'm lazy enough not to take another pedal board with me and use the NE onboard effects.

Guitar pedals work great especially on EPs and synths.
For my synth rig I use a Moog MF Drive (awesome!!!), a TC Hall of Fame 2 and that little delay-looper-masterofallweirdthings called EHX Canyon.
Very simple and effective rig.
For gigging, however, to avoid further hassle I stick to the internal effects of the Stage2.

Re: Cool Effect Pedals to use
The onboard FX are pretty powerful on the NE5 and other recent Nords. I have a lot of fun with the wahs, RM, delays, OD, etc. to the point where I've never really found the need for anything external. I have a Lexicon rack unit I use with my CP-70 and also with the NL2XR. If I was going to add something to the Nord, I'd try to find something new and different than what exists internally.
Nords: NE2, NS2 88, NS3 Compact x 2
Live rig: NS3, Vent, Radial KL-8, Shure PSM-900 IEM Rig, UE18 & UE7 IEMs.
Studio: Hammond A-101 & Leslie 122, Yamaha CP-80, Yamaha S90, NS2, DSI Prophet-6, Vent II, Roland JX-8P.

I forgot this one: massive and wild with a Little Phatty
Also forgot to mention that I tried something very cool lately: I have a POG2 I sometimes use for octaves but I barely use the rightmost part of the pedal. It turns out that the "attack" setting modifies the attack of each note that is injected without affecting the dynamics of already present notes. Excellent.
So I tried this with EP, clavinet and acoustic pianos patches, along with an EHX Freeze: cool pads! I even adde that MF Drive afterwards to make it grittier...
