Another transpose dilemma

Postby Lee Batchelor » 21 Oct 2016, 22:33

Hi team,

I noticed that when you change Programs, the 5D reverts to concert pitch. For example, if I were to play two songs in a row in the key of D, I use Program 1 for Song 1, and Program 2 for Song 2. After Song 1 is finished, I select Program 2, but Program 2 has been snapped back to concert pitch. The only way I see around that is to memorize Program 2, transposed to the key of D. This is VERY inconvenient. I get the feeling transposition is a fairly new thing for Nord, in that they have set a very low priority for users who need transposition on a regular basis :(.

I could use the Global transposer, however it's buried neck deep in a menu. Sadly, this could be a deal breaker for me. I bought my Nord at Long and McQuade, who has a 30 day money back guarantee. I may need to exercise that option unless someone has a brilliant idea. At 63 years of age, it's a little cumbersome to learn all my tricks of the trade in several keys. I'm certainly not the only out there who relies on this most valuable tool! Ideas welcome. Thanks.

The electro doesn't save transpose settings as part of the program?

Practice songs in all keys to become less dependent on transposing the keyboard for every song.

The NE5 retains Transpose settings on a per program basis. The difference is, when I play any other keyboard, you can switch Voices (Programs in Nord talk) to anything you want and the keyboard stays in the same key. I guess the pianos with dedicated buttons are in Global mode vs. Program mode like the Nord.

"Practice songs in all keys to become less dependent on transposing the keyboard for every song." Very true. Perhaps not very practical. I'm doing some Jazz stuff that could take weeks to learn in the band's key :(.

The nord stage has a dedicated transpose button, and it's per-program.

Lee, there are TWO different transpose functions available on the NE5, as also found on Stage models. The front panel transpose is stored on per-program basis. There is also GLOBAL TRANSPOSE in the System Menu which will affect ALL programs. With Nord you get it both ways for maximal flexibility.

Thanks for the thoughts, guys.

I know the difference between the Global Transpose and Program Transpose. There may be a work around, thanks to the List feature. I could set up copies of my favorite Programs in difference keys because the key is memorized on a per Program basis. The list could be labeled:

Piano (C)
Piano (D)
Piano (E)
Organ (C)
Organ (D)
Organ (E)
and so on...

After a Program is selected, with the amazing surface editing features on the Electro, I can change sounds (Organs, Pianos, and Synths) as desired. I looked into upgrading to a Stage EX. It would cost about $1,500 plus our wonderful tax called "GST" (gouge and screw tax). That would end my marriage :).

Another way is to use the Global Transpose function. I just finished a Canadian artist tribute show. I used the piano voices for most of it. The Global Transpose function keeps the focus until you turn it off. It is easier to dial in a new key with it than the awkward "two-button, turn the knob" method currently available. I just wish Nord had put more thought into that function. It's almost like it was an afterthought. There are more of us who need the function than you think!

Funny, some people have asked for a "not so easily pressed" transpose button in the NS2.

Interesting point. I agree that the button should be somewhat isolated in the surface real estate. You certainly don't want to press the wrong button during a critical show! Nor should it be SO damn hard to use!!!

I found that's the best way myself so I wouldn't forget to play the next song forgetting the transpose key embarrasing
