4D Piano section kaput

Postby -momo- » 27 Mar 2017, 15:45

Hi All

It appears the piano side of my Electro 4D (SW61) is INOP. Unfortunately this happened right in the middle of a gig. All organ patches working fine, switched to a Clav patch just as we rolled into "Superstition" (FFS!), and... nothing. I managed to get another clav patch going on my SX-90 to clumsily save the day.

When the set was over I dig into a bit a bit more, but didn't take long to see what was going on. All organ patches fine, ALL piano patches silent. I've not been able to get into it much more than that, but thought I'd start here just in case this was a known issue. I would hate to do a factory reset as I have customized a fair bit of patches. In any event, if that has to happen to fix this, it wont be the end of the world.

My 4D is just under three years old, haven't had any other issues with it so far. Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks

Is there any output routing that could be wrong (e.g. piano to right channel only when you're running mono from left channel)?
My standard debug procedure is "unplug all non-essential cables and test with headphones". Sounds dumb, but the most difficult problems can be those where I've made wrong assumptions.

I'd do a full backup in any case, then factory reset.
IMHO, the chance that it fixes the problem is small but it'll probably speed up communications with a service center to rule out software problems.

I would also try to input an external MIDI signal. If the piano suddenly works again, it would hint at a keyboard problem (2nd switch for velocity sensing). Taking wild guesses here, but that's as said what I would do.

Thanks for the response. Nothing changed on output routing, I always use left/mono out to my small rig mixer. Otherwise I will try all the test you mention tonight and see where that gets me.

Hi quick update: Thanks offrhodes, you were spot on. It was output routing. I checked and it was set to "SO" - organ routed left and piano right. As I use left/mono out, that explains what happened. Changed it to "St" and everything is working properly.

Thanks again for your help!
