Tabla

Post by Stoat »

So I have been playing around trying to get some good Indian sounding drums. I lost my best one (doh!) but managed to get some good bayan bass sounds but no decent high ones. Whenever I try and make a high tuned drum of any type I seem to end up with muffled bells or tones. Anyone have any tips examples they want to share? Many thanks

Hi,

Some tips:
Start with a pitch between 60 and 63
Try the drum (d) type waveforms, the harmonic (h) types may also work
start with Dyn timbre 25, timbre 5, timbre decay 20, decay 30 (or so)
(just to be able to hear overtones without exaggerating too much)
set Spectra until you like the pitch of the overtones
go back to fine tune timbre settings;
avoid too high timbre/dyn timbre settings, and too long timbre decay times otherwise it will sound like a gong or bell,
at least use some degree of dyn timbre, because you probably want to hear more overtones when striking harder,
try all click types (apart from the noise ones perhaps)

You'll probably have to go back and forth a lot between the parameters, and experiment..

Cheers,
Albert

Many thanks! Im making some really great progress now, working towards having a few real world(esque) programs to work with - tabla seems to be the hardest
