Several Issues w/ ND2

Postby Jfriesen » 11 Oct 2015, 05:35

I've tried to find an answer to these questions here for 6 months and by contacting Pablo. Figured Albert seems to have many answers here. So here it goes!: Thx!

Have had ND2 for 6 months, purchased used and have upgraded to v3.00. use nord pad, but prefer my pintech tour elite pads since they are mesh and respond well! and quiet. can play through the night and not disturb my wife.

Also owned a brand new ND2 just prior, so I've tried two units with same issue.

- low volume headphones (ath-m50) so they should be fine.

I'm not enjoying my experience and am trying to find out sources of the trouble.

seems to be worse from pintech pads, and sometimes will just get louder out of nowhere, pad to pad or all of them.

nord pad is more reliable, but have to hit way too hard on either surface to get much out. Went through threshold and sensitivity options and it helped a bit, but not for master volume.

main issue: It takes all the fun out when i have to hit so hard to barely hear the sounds.

I've used roland kits and never struggled like this at all. weird.

the nord has such killer sounds that I want it to work.

thanks for any guidance folks!!!

I'm in Northern California.

And have conversed w/ Dago Sondervan online, and he has offered to put up a video soon, cuz he's having a blast with ND2 and can even play super light on it with sticks or hands. that's awesome!!!

I wonder if you have the wrong impedance headphones. Is this only with the headphones output? Check the spec of your headphones and try a differnt model/make with different impedance.

Hi,
so, you are experiencing low audio levels on your headphones, when you play your ND2 with either mesh drum pads, or the Nord Pad

Did you try using the [trig/tap] button? First make sure the level of the trigger button is set at 20, try several sounds, a couple of programs. For this test avoid sounds where channel levels are set to lower levels, etc..
The [trig/tap] button (when set at 20) triggers sounds at maximum velocity. When I do this, I can't turn the volume knob all the way up, it will simply blow up my headphones and ears. My headphones (BD 770), are 250 Ohms, yours might be louder in theory, they are 38 Ohms (I quickly googled your headphones, not sure though). So be careful!

If you do get good levels using the trigger button, your problem is probably on the input side, too weak trigger signals, possibly wrong sensitivity / dynamic curve (!) / trig type settings. Some pads also have a little knob to adjust sensitivity, yours too? You say you get irratic/varying results from your mesh pads, try different cables..

If you don't get decent levels with the triggering button, it's either the (headphones-) output, your headphones, or your ears (just kidding)... Since you tried 2 different ND2 units and with both you get the same results, I doubt that they were both defective in the same way, not impossible, just unlikely.. It's a good idea to try different headphones too if possible..

Hope this helps!
Albert

Thank you kindly for getting back...and so quickly!

Settings for trig/tap velocity are at 20. Still get only decent volume w master all the way up but nothing loud enough to really be called normal.

I'll tried a few headphones but will do some testing with others and with some roland mesh pads. wonder what setting works best w pintech pads and if pintech are good? new to all this and heard they were, but not seeing good results w the used ones i got online from a knowledgeable guy.

Do i need to use mono or stereo cables into pintech or roland pads? figured mono, but have tried both. just curious.

nord pad performance is ok, but still not very loud. will try some different things.

I'll report back as I test.

Had ears tested last month and still great after all these years playing acoustic drums! lol.

thanks much Albert and other who have chimed in!

Hi,

I'm not sure why the standard cables for a lot of pads seem to be TRS 'stereo', maybe actually only required for 2 zone pads,
think that if TS 'mono' cables work, than that should be fine, as long as the cables and connectors are well made, reliable, make good connection..

Speaking of which.. I had some weird problems with a stereo mini jack to stereo 1/4" jack adapter, making poor connection.

Good idea to test several things, keep us posted!

hello,

I am having similar issues using nord drum 2 with nord pad. I adjusted the input sensitivity to 100 and the trigger is set to hand. When I hit the trigger button I get a nice level but when I play it's weak. this is true on head phones and speakers...

Hi,
Did you try different velocity curves?
