Set up for ND2, Nord Pad, NB2, and iRig Pro for Dummies

Post by k8k8k8 »

Hi all! I just got a Nord Drum 2, a Nord Pad, iRig Pro, and downloaded Nord Beat 2 to my iPad. I need a super simple explanation of how I should set it up and if I need any cables that aren't included with the products.

Based on what was included with the iRig, the only set up that made any sense to me at all was to connect the ND2's midi out to the midi in on the iRig. Then the iRig's out can plug to the iPad via Thunder. When I have it set like this, the iRig's light shows that when I hit the Nord Pad, it's receiving signals, but I don't get anything in the headphones from the iPad/Nord Beat (whether they are plugged into the ND2 or the iPad). I know I've got it set up wrong, but the only other configuration is midi in on both the ND2 and the iRig and that doesn't make sense either. Do I need additional cables so I can go from the iRig's midi out to the ND2's midi in? But then I also need another additional cable to go from the iPad (Thunder) into the iRig's input (midi, 1/4", or XLR). It surprises me that none of the cables that come with the iRig could be what I need.

I'm completely confused by this thing. I thought it would be plug and play. If there's other set up, I'd appreciate the basic steps, too.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi! Welcome to the forum!

I had to look up the specs of your iRig Pro, it seems it only has MIDI IN. So on your iPad, you can only receive notes coming from your Nord Drum2 when you hit the pads...

In order to send notes to your ND2, e.g. playing with the Nord Beat app & have your ND2 produce sound, you'll need an interface that has a MIDI OUT port.

The iRig MIDI 2 is a good option, - you'll also need two regular MIDI cables, best to buy these at a proper music store (local or web)

Alternatively, find yourself any simple but decent USB-MIDI interface that supports Core-MIDI, for example the E-MU Xmidi1x1 works well and isn't too expensive -
In order to use such a USB-MIDI interface with your iPad, you'll also need the camera connection kit (30-pin-to-female-USB or Lightning-to-female-USB) -
if you're tempted to look for cheaper USB-MIDI interfaces, check this thread to see which interfaces perhaps to avoid: http://www.norduserforum.com/nord-drum- ... 53-10.html

Cheers,

Albert

Thanks for the replies! I think I'll get the iRig midi 2. Albert had said I'd need 2 midi/midi cables, but in the video in the 2nd reply, they only have the iRig connected to the iPad (using the cable that comes with the iRig) and a midi-midi from the iRig midi out to the ND2 midi in. So, if I buy the iRig midi 2, I only need to buy one extra midi-to-midi cable to complete this set up?

I appreciate the clear answers! Great forum

Hi!

Well, I think the iRig MIDI 2 package doesn't include the MIDI cables you'll need, please double check that first -
.. the above video shows the original iRig MIDI - which indeed comes with cables for MIDI in and out, that look similar to the cable you got with your iRig Pro...
These cables however are different from the ones you'll need with the iRig MIDI 2...

You'll need cables like this: http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_sssnake_sk ... e8fb8cd421
And you'll at least need one, but I'd get 2 if I were you, - check your local dealer and find some of decent quality, and appropriate length..

One note on the original iRig MIDI; it's still being sold, much smaller, and cheaper than the second version..
However, if I understand correctly - you have an Apple device with the Lightning connector - and in all the images I can find of the smaller iRig MIDI, it has the 30-pin Apple connector - so you'd also need to buy the Lightning-to-30-pin converter to use it...

The iRig MIDI 2 however, is more flexible and versatile than the original, comes with a Lightning cable and a USB cable - (30pin cable is sold separately) - but as far as I can tell - MIDI cables are not included -

Cheers,
Albert

I can confirm that, 'cause I own an iRig MIDI 2.

Hi,

I use ND2 and NB2 in Ableton with iRig midi 2.

How could I make NB2 to control all the 6 ND2 channel sounds at the same time? Because now it controls only one...

please help me :)

Hi Kavinski!

Nord beat 2 in Ableton?

I'm not familiar with Ableton, I'll just go through the MIDI setup I use in combination with the NB2 app:

1) On the ND2 match the global MIDI channel [GL.XX]* with the MIDI channel in the app (go to Menu > MIDI setup, check MIDI channel) -

2) Whilst in the MIDI setup menu of the app: check if the note numbers listed (e.g. #1: 60, #2: 62, #3: 64, etc...) - match the MIDI note numbers set in the ND2 : in this example: [n. 60]* for channel 1, [n. 62]* for channel 2, etc...

3) Set the individual MIDI channels in the ND2 to off: [Ch.OF]* (on each of the 6 channels) - because you don't need this option in combination with the app,...

If it still doesn't work, there may be other issues, let me know...

Cheers,

Albert

*press [SHIFT] + [MIDI] - once, or more times, then use the knob to set the value
