Postby Soljanka » 05 Aug 2014, 13:06

Hello,
I'm searching for tips how to design rim shots and rim clicks suitable to a existing snare sound.

Hi there!

Are you looking for additions to a snare sound that you already programmed, or to a real acoustic snare?
I think a rim shot is some of the ringy overtones exaggerated, rim click is the dry woody click of course...

Needless to say the ND2 is a synth and perhaps best at making surreal synthetic sounds with a very organic touch, but I think you can get quite close to acoustic sounds as well;
for click check out this thread, maybe some of the sounds of the bank I uploaded there may serve as a starting point, there are some click sounds in there somewhere, but perhaps not very convincing...

have fun playing & experimenting!

Albert

Hi Albert,

thank you for the link.
Im looking for additions to programmed snares. Ok – a Rim Click may is a mor stand alone sound but a Rim Shot should be suitable to the snare sound wich is (virtually) plyaed on.
I do have a Roland PDX-100 Snare Pad wich i want to use with such sounds.
Thats because i want to learn how to programm these sounds.

Hi,

About your hardware setup, just to be sure:
The PDX-100 has two triggers: center and rim/edge, unlike the Roland drum-brains, your Nord Drum2 is not compatible with the rim/edge trigger of your pad. That is; with the pad connected to your ND2 it can only trigger one sound (channel), and hitting the rim won't make any difference. EDIT: .. but you're using a Y cable to trigger 2 channels depending whether you hit head or rim.. (sorry, at first I thought this wasn't possible)

A rim shot is normally played by hitting rim and head at the same time, if you also want to do that with your setup, you probably only want to program the loud overtones on the second channel. The difficult part will be the relation between how hard you hit the rim and head triggers and how exactly you program the 2 sounds dynamically, so that the whole will behave/sound as one instrument. Perhaps you also need to apply different trigger settings for rim and head. That would be cool, but no idea if it's do-able. You can also decide to only play either head or rim, which makes things easier in some aspects..

Then for the rim-shot sound, start with your original snaredrum sound, and:
- increase (Dyn) Timbre settings, and Timbre Decay until it starts to ring even more, but avoid a too complex sound,
- or perhaps raise the pitch to a frequency of one of the overtones of your original snaredrum sound
- perhaps boost it with a bit with EQ
- perhaps decrease the level of the other channels because the rim-shot usually really stands out from the rest ...

it will take some experimenting I guess, hope it will work!

Cheers,
Albert

Hi Albert,

thank you.
To the setup: I'm using a Y-cable (stereo jack to 2 mono jacks) aka insert cable with the PDX, so both triggers can be used.
Thats why I'm looking for aditional sounds of snares.

I will try your advices.

Ah, I see - okay!

I didn't know it was possible with Roland pads (with Yamaha's it isn't - I think) - anyway I edited the above post - keep us posted!
