Hello all,
What advantage does the native Nord drum pad have over something like an Alesis SamplePad? The Alesis has more pads, works as a standalone sampler, and is substantially cheaper than the Drum pad.
Any reason why I'd want to use Nord's drum pad? Thanks.

Re: Nord's own Drum Pad vs. Alesis SamplePad?
Hej!
They are two different approaches to percussion ... do not fully replace each other.
The Nord is a synth, fully programmable, for unique expressions. Smartly divided in two parts for extended flexibility.
I use Arturia Spark for drumming, since I'm not into drumming myself.
And now there is a new kid in the village who is a fully educated drummer that I can use.
But I could really consider buying both the Nord and the Alesis when I want to expand my "studio".

Re: Nord's own Drum Pad vs. Alesis SamplePad?
Yes,
The Nord Pad can't go without the Nord Drum2, the combination costs a lot more than the Samplepad Pro ..
As Michael says, synthesis + samples is nice. You can connect the Samplepad Pro with the Nord Drum2 using a MIDI cable, and play both. The only thing perhaps is that the Nord pad triggers the Nord Drum2 faster in theory, MIDI adds some latency. Alternatives are the Roland SPD-Sx, and Yamaha DTX Multi12, they have 9 pads, but cost a lot more. Maybe also check second hand SPD-S. None of them have synthesis like the Nord drum though..
Cheers,
Albert

Re: Nord's own Drum Pad vs. Alesis SamplePad?
Yes, I wasn't talking about choosing Nord Drum 2 vs. Alesis. I was talking about getting a Nord Drum 2 and then ALSO getting a Alesis SamplePad and using it instead of Nord Drum PAD.
So you're saying triggering via MIDI would be slower than Nord's native pad? MIDI delay should be imperceptible, no? I have no experience hooking up devices to each other via MIDI...

Re: Nord's own Drum Pad vs. Alesis SamplePad?
Technically speaking, Pad connected to ND2 might be faster in response than Alesis via midi because it is not a midi connection and not constricted to midi baud rate. But it is not likely that this would be a big deal. Folks have been using midi for decades and getting by.
Pad works nicely with ND2 because they were designed to be a tandem. Six pads for six-part drum brain. Why not get both and play the Alesis alongside the Nord for a full kit?

Re: Nord's own Drum Pad vs. Alesis SamplePad?
Sorry I brought that up, I agree, it's theoretical at best, (and now I think of it, actually not latency) the only people I heard complaining about MIDI were drummers, but - given the specs of MIDI - probably actually complaining about whatever they were trying to trigger, (possibly software), sorry for adding noise again herepablomastodon wrote:But it is not likely that this would be a big deal. Wartaler,
Apology NOT accepted, only because you have NO reason to apologize. When it comes to Nord Drum stuff, you are THE MAN and always have been in this forum. Truth be told, when difficult questions arise in this forum relating to drums, I usually sit back and wait for your superior response and you never disappoint!
Bless,
Pablo

Re: Nord's own Drum Pad vs. Alesis SamplePad?
So, if I understand correctly, the real question is that if you get the Nord Drum, should you get the Drum Pad or Alesis Sample Pad?
As others stated, MIDI should be more than enough. Personally, I would get the Sample Pad if you NEED samples. If not... then I'd get the Nord Pad just because it looks better

Re: Nord's own Drum Pad vs. Alesis SamplePad?
I have and use an Alesis Control Pad with my Nord Drum 2. I like how I can assign MIDI channels/notes my own way with it. It has two extra pads so I'll assign them to a tom channel and turn one tom into three of different pitches, thus freeing up a couple channels for other things. I can hook up my kick pedal up to it too, works well. Feel is pretty good, though the thwack seems a bit loud and of course it's significantly larger. I bought it used for $100.
My setup with a Control Pad, FAT Kat, TC HOF reverb, and Behringer mini mixer.
