Nord Drum freezing while updating :o

Postby Aria Music » 21 Apr 2013, 22:39

Hello all,

I'm sorry to introduce myself for the first time here with this bad situation but i'm really freaking out!

While trying to update my Nord Drum, after erasing the previous version the process just stopped and right now I am with an empty little red box unable to get back to the previous version or install the new one.

the details:

My Nord Drum was in 1.08 (I know it's stupid but I didn't realized my synth was already up to date in the first place)

I downloaded the installer on the Nord website "Update Nord Drum OS v1.08" on my Macbook Pro running Lion 10.8.3

I first tried to update the device through my RME Fireface UC audio interface midi ports (tried 1 & 2). I could select the ports on the installer but never were able to start the update, it automatically said "ERROR: Timeout: No reply from synth".

So i connected my Novation ReMote 25 SL midi keyboard via USB and to the Nord Drum. Selected the ReMote SL midi ports 1 in the installer and this time i was able to start the update. It recognized the previous version (1.08) and allowed me to clic the "Update" button.

The update started normally, first "Freeing space..." then "Sending update..." and BOOM! "ERROR: Timeout: No reply from synth".

I tried several times but it won't go further, my Nord Drum remains empty, its screen indicates "EOS" at powering and "rdy" as for "ready to get OS" i guess but it seems like the Nord Drum just freeze while updating, the lights running on the device's screen during the process just freeze and my only choice is to cut the power off...

Please, please, please someone tell me that you've been there and that there is a quick solution because, of course, I was planning on using the little ******* in the studio tomorrow.

Thanks!

I had the same situation. And in my case it was the Midi-usb connection. Ok, you already tried two solutions, but maybe it is still the connection thing.
I used two midi-usb cables which usually work fine for sending midi datas. but they did not work for the update process. then i tried a different midi usb cable, one with one usb and two midi plugs (like this). connected them to midi in and midi out and everything worked ...

good luck,

I've had issues with updating synths via Sysex before (don't have a Nord Drum though).

I was able to update my Blofeld with my Cakewalk UM-3G, but not via the built-in USB-to-MIDI function or via my M-Audio FastTrack Ultra. On my DSI Poly Evolver, I had to slow down the sending of Sysex update messages (as described on their site), because updating would fail; apparently the Evolver was getting Sysex messages faster than it could process them, which led to some messages being dropped causing the update to hang (= never finish).

I don't know what tool you're using to send the update (maybe it is a Nord utlity without any controls), but you could try slowing it down a bit (say 10-25%). I've used Sysex Librarian on my Mac and that worked fine for me. I would think MIDI-OX would work fine for Windows.

Any luck yet?

I haven't tried it myself to be honest, in general class compliant 'plug and play' MIDI interfaces that do not require driver installation (e.g. Midimate II) work best for me

Keep us posted!

Albert

EDIT: I'm using ESI (M4U) and E-MU (Xmidi1x1) USB-MIDI interfaces, Win8 PC - and the ND2 OS updates went well

Hi Citotec!

Not sure if I can help, hopefully someone else joins in who knows what to do best /had the same problem. In the mean time, could you give some more details;
Are you on Mac or PC? what MIDI interface are you using? how's it connected? Did exactly the same happen as described above?
Does your ND2 still connect to the updater software? what is the current situation?

- First: maybe download the OS update again from the Nord website, perhaps your first download was slightly corrupted..

As Selex in the above post mentions: even if your MIDI setup works for sending regular MIDI data (notes), it may give problems when trying to do an OS update:
- Connect the MIDI interface directly to your computer (no USB hub) and also connect MIDI IN and OUT directly to your ND2,
- Some poorly made USB-MIDI interfaces* don't work properly under some conditions & combinations of hardware!
- Same holds true for MIDI cables: Try different cables if possible
- Connect both MIDI IN and OUT
- Correctly specify your MIDI interface for both MIDI IN and OUT in the updater software

*e.g.: http://www.arvydas.co.uk/2013/07/cheap- ... -required/

Good luck! Keep us posted!

Greetings...

Just FYI... I had the same problem with MIDI timeouts and freezing/failing while trying to flash the OS to v.3 in my ND2. I was using MIDI cables connected to my DAW through an M-Audio 1010. It failed every time. I then moved the MIDI link to a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and it worked perfectly the first time. I even repeated it several times just to ensure it wasn't a fluke.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Alan
