NORD DRUM 2 ACOUSTIC TOM SOUNDS

Postby dj_porter » 22 Jul 2013, 02:59

hI EVERYBODY!

I got the Nord drum 2 yesterday and I had been trying to create a acoustic high tom and acoustic mid tom sounds without any success, anybody knows how to do it?
All the tom sounds in the library have no enough attack to match the toms in the Roland module or to be closer to that sounds

Thank you

Hi again!
Congrats with your second little red baby! (If I remember correctly you also have the ND1)

Anyway, I can't really answer - because I don't know how your Roland samples sound, and my ND2 hasn't arrived yet, but with my ND1 experience I'll give it a try..

First, as you know, the ND synthesizer has a very dynamic, live-like response to your playing, but the sounds that it produces won't necessarily sound like real acoustic drums, it isn't meant to, so when they've placed a patch in the 'acoustic' cathegory, I'd take it with a grain of salt, the sounds will have some of the tonal complexity of accoustic tom sounds but your Roland samples will come closer to real acoustic toms,

that said:
1) I bet you already tried different Click types and increasing Click level?
2) There is a feature called Punch in the Tone section, try playing with that
3) try fiddling with Noise parameters, perhaps try adding a very short burst of noise..

Have fun experimenting!
Albert

Hi! and thank you for your answer!

I have a Roland TD3, I use it mostly for cymbals but I have the 3rd tom and the floor tom connected to the Roland too, I need something closer to an acoustic, i tried with the Nord and I can't get that sound you get when you hit an acoustic head, I got the tone/sound but not that sound of the drumstick on the drum head, is like the nord sound is just half of the sound.

Yes, I have both now :)

I will give it a go again today

I attached a couple of pics :)

Hi!
Nice color! are those bought as pads/triggers or did you modify an acoustic kit?
Perhaps you could share your setup in the new thread I 'Your setup with the Nord drum' where you can briefly highlight the choises you made

Did you manage?
Perhaps you could let the ND2 do all tom sounds, then at least you won't have inconsistencies, and a nice layout for, let's say, tuned percussion kind of fun with ND2

Cheers,
Albert

HI!

This is a Pearl Forum, yes, it is modified by a british company and I made some changes.
Each drum is stereo, the snare is dual trigger, the bassdrum is mono.
The electronic pad is a DDRUM from the 80s, i changed the piezo and I got rid of the original mount to add the "Pearl" one and this way I can use normal tom mounts.
The bassdrum have on top and in the side some female Jack 1/4" with lock, then all the cables from the pads ends in the bassdrum and only a loom in coming from it, ultra tidy, no cables hanging.
Most of the pads have a split cable then I can connect more than one module on each pad, the combinations are endless and the result is great!
Now I have 3 Ddrum pads instead one and 2 floor toms.

cheers

Hi Beatus,
in short: my ND2 still hasn't arrived, so I don't know -it could have something to do with impedance -
but why don't you go ahead and start a new thread* on that topic, so that everyone will notice your question better!
then we can discuss this further there ...
Cheers,
Albert

Hi..dj_porter,

..to come back to your original question about acoustic tom sounds, I said the ND2 is not designed to reproduce life-like acoustic drum kit sounds,
and I do still think it's at it's best with very-unreal-yet-with-an-acoustic-feel-to-it- sounds, but I couldn't resist to try, -and it became sort of a challenge!

I've attached a bank with a couple of kits, kicks, snares, toms, and cymbals ..I'm not so satisfied with the latter, but then .. who really cares ;) ... it at least was fun, and it at helped me to learn all parameters of the new OS2.x
I don't know what you think about the toms, perhaps in the mean time you managed to get way better sounds than my attempt here, ...

I've learned that you can add some extra punch with a very short pitch-shift down (the Punch function itself does the same, but doing it with pitch shift is more effective),
Noise is also quite an important ingredient for toms that you need to tweak depending on frequency (note). For snaredrums I find that adding a bit of attack to the noise helps to mimic the buzz ...

ok, the next bank I'm going to share here will probably be ...ND2 fireworks!
perhaps we should do a ND2-most-spectacular-fireworks-sounds-competition!

So Enjoy, Expand, Improve...

Cheers,
Albert

EDIT new version:
1-6 kits; (bass-snare-hh-tom-tom-tom)
- bass drum collection (long decay and short decay)
- snare collection (long decay, short & dull, short & bright
- tom collection (only high toms)
- cymbals (attempts)
- clicks & claves
- latin percussion (sort of..)
- snare cajon (low/high)
- udu-ish (low/high)
