Re: ND2/Nordbeat and other devices [MIDI]

Guess this post fits in here: now that the new Arturia Beatstep Pro is available, I'll try It with the ND2 at my local sound/synth store and if all is good, I'll grab one. I'm really looking forward to using the drum gate outs on the Beatstep to control the ND via its trig ins. I want to see how easy or complicated it is to program, edit and play beats on the go. The Beatstep has two independent monophonic step sequencers with MIDI and CV outs as well, also MIDI over USB, so I could control and drive the ND2, the Sub Phatty, the Waldorf Pulse 2 and syncable iPad apps with it. I'll let you guys know how this works out.

Hey
Excellent, interested, thanks for the tip, I was looking at this one: http://squarp.net but it's a bit expensive
Keep us posted, nice!

Hi Gabor & Wartaler!
I use the nordbeat app with irig midi 2 (out) then I use a midi-splitting Y cable to send midi to my ND2 as well as my A1. Whenever nordbeat is the master I noticed that my A1 tempo display is a few BPM's different from the NB tempo in which case I can manually adjust the tempo on my A1 to match NB. This is interesting because the A1 is supposed to display "E.cl" (receiving external clock) whenever it receives outside clock and, in theory, wouldn't be able to manually adjust the BPM's from the A1.

So there's definitely something funky going on in the NB acting as the master tempo.

I use a similar workaround Gabor where I send midi out from logic 9 to the midi in on irig2 and set NB app to slave mode. My A1 also correctly displays "E.cl" when receiving its clock from Logic.

I'm also curious about beatstep and pyramid so please keep posting any good info/examples

Cheers,
Nate

I thought NB was just playing and sending a slightly higher tempo than set.
Strange, so in your setup it almost seems as if the NB clock signal isn't recognised, but the A1 does display a tempo close to the tempo set in NB. Does it help if you hit stop, then hit play again in he app? Does the A1 respond when you change the tempo in the app? And what happens if you use another iOS app as clock source/master in the same setup (splitter and all), does the A1 display 'E.cl' ?

Well I hope the developer will have a look at it!

Albert,

I can't recall wether A1 displays higher or lower values but it's usually in the "ballpark" of a few BPM's (even when NB is at 120!). Hitting stop then play doesn't seem to affect the tempo value. And of course, the A1 is receiving midi (A1's red midi light flashing/note sequence plays, etc.) so if I adjust NB tempo the A1 responds accordingly.

I should clarify that this happens with/without using a Y cable. The Y cable is only to send a separate signal to both A1 and ND2.
Come to think of it the ND2 doesn't care what the tempo is, just if there's a program change.
The only tempo that's important to ND2 is for repeat(s) which is stored in programs or adjusted manually. Hmmm, maybe that's why the master clock doesn't send continuous, exact values (like 126.1, "E.cl") but that's just guessing on my part. :geek:I haven't tried running E.cl sync from any other iPad app besides NB, I'll try with Cubasis.

Cheers,
Nate

Hi!

Yes, the reason I asked whether it helps stopping and starting again is that some gear requires a start signal, (don't know if the A1 does), maybe NB also sends that when you hit play, not sure

I think it is a little bug, I do think they want the app to be used, integrated with other gear / apps as well

As long as you sync everything (eg ND2 echo) to NB through MIDI then nobody will notice untill you actually measure the NB tempo / compare it with other gear that is not synced to it..

Cheers,
Albert

I totally agree. Nordbeat was designed to be paired with the ND2. Even in slave mode I will tend to set ND2's BPM different from Nordbeat to create different repeat values, other than 1/4 notes.
As far as the A1 E.cl I'll try stop/start NB to see how that affects BPM values. I'll try some different iOS apps as well.

Cheers

Jonathan from Kymatica just emailed saying that it seems Clavia Nord is willing to have him look into this bpm issue and roll out a Nord Beat update later this year.

Todays Nord beat 3 app update also includes a bugfix ‘related to BPM when synchronizing to MIDI Clock’,
Perhaps this case can finally be closed..
