I have had this problem with my ND1.
I now have a start up sequence for my equipment (like in Apollo 13) and the ND1 has to be first.
If I forget to switch it on the simplest things is to switch it all off and restart.
Fortunately I don't have a huge amount of equipment and a couple of complete restarts have taught me to remember.

Re: ND2 broke down... during 2 hours
Ran into the same issue here after upgrading to OS3. Thanks to kroffe for his suggestion. Plugging in the midi in cable AFTER the ND2 has booted resolved the problem for me.
Clavia, should take notice and fix this bug. It also affects the ND2's ability to connect with Nord Drum Manager.

same here with the elektron Octatrack. MIDI crapped out in the middle of a jam. only rebooting it first and then connecting MIDI made it functional again. annoying but good to know. took me 2 sec looking at this forum to find out - cheers for this thread

Re: ND2 broke down... during 2 hours
This is an old thread, but just bought a ND2 Feb 2016 from a reputable on-line retailer at discount for "blemished". Unit works fine except MIDI control with Roland Octopad SPD-30 is dodgy. The answer seems to be found earlier in this thread, but seems like it should be highlighted somewhere else in forum or on Web as a MIDI defect?
MIDI clock info that comes in from another device during ND2 startup makes it deaf to all incoming MID messages? So anytime I start up the ND2, it must be started up by itself before MIDI'ing up with another device?
I tried a couple of iterations in my current setup.
1. If you start the ND2 by itself before connecting via MID with another device, all is well.
2. If you start ND2 when connected up to another device with MIDI, it ain't gonna work, not matter how many times you hit the Octopads!
3. If you do #2, and turn off the Octopad and restart (with the MIDI cable still connected), it will still not work. You can only get the ND2 to accept MIDI signals in this case by turning off Octopad, disconnecting the MIDI cable, and restarting/reconnecting.
Apparently this has not been fixed since this thread was first posted, as I am using software version 3.0? You would think this would be recognized as a significant software flaw by Nord, especially for studios/musicians who might have a lot of cables hooked up and don't want to routinely unhook cables before starting to get things to work properly?
Thanks for any additional input or assistance on this. I was ready to return unit, but apparently it's not just this unit.

Re: ND2 broke down... during 2 hours
Hi!
Yes, true, no update since
I think it's clock signals that mess the ND2 up during startup
So the order of switching units on should be the ND2 before octapad I guess

Re: ND2 broke down... during 2 hours
BTW, I advised Nord of the MIDI connection problem, and got two responses from them. They indicated they were only recently aware of the problem, and there were no immediate plans to fix it since it's not something most people would encounter. I directed them to this topic link to indicate the problem's been around for a while. Maybe they're right that most people don't encounter it, but I found it the second time I turned the unit on. Thanks to the people here whose posts helped me troubleshoot!!
