MIDI Settings problem

Postby GiaGGio » 07 Jul 2017, 21:44

HI,
I want to set different midi channel to different drum banks.
i set memory protect to OFF.
then i select the kit A1 then i enter in MIDI settings, i select the same midi channel on each pad ( es. channel 1) and then i store the bank by pressing shift/store kit.
then i repeat for A2 Kit but this time i select Midi channel 2 for each pad. I store Drum kit but now i have Midi Channel 2 on both Kit ( A1 and A2 )

I want : Midi Channel 1 on A1 Kit
Midi Channel 2 on A2 Kit
Midi Channel 3 on A3 Kit .....etc...

All Kits on GLOBAL 10

please help me
thanks a lot
Claudio.

Hi GiaGGio, - welcome to the forum!

The MIDI settings are stored globally, not per drumkit. So the same MIDI settings apply regardless of which drumkit you are using.

Even in case Nord would update firmware of the 3P to make it possible to store the MIDI settings per drumkit, you could still only play one kit at the same time.

The simplest MIDI setup is to set the global channel, match it with your output channel in your sequencer. Make sure you program your beat using the notes that are set for each pad on the Nord drum. Turn off all 'individual' MIDI channels per pad (unless you want to control sound parameters thru MIDI, or play melodies with one or more of the drum sounds).

Cheers,
Albert

OMG !! damn !

so not good for me :( ...
i need to play a drum rack in ableton Live, so i have 4 pads ( drum clips) for the track 1 of my set ...
another 4 pads ( drum clips) for the track 2 of my set...etc... all stored in the same DrumRack ( in ableton )

So now how can i change the map of pads on nordDrum when i change the track ?

nb: previously i have the Roland SpdSX and i can set different midi note for different drum banks.
i can't believe this is not possible on this expensive machine !!!!!!!!

Hi GiaGGio,

I'm not familiar with Ableton, I'm not sure if I fully understand your setup,

A drumkit (program) on the Nord drum 3P consists of 6 drumsounds.
You can always select a different drumkit for each song, or part of a song. You should probably be able to let Ableton switch between different drumkits. According to the CC list on page 15 of the manual, you can select bank with CC 0 (MSB) and CC 32 (LSB). [Edit: select bank with CC, and drumkit with Program Change]

Make sure the MIDI channel that controls the 3P is the same in all your songs in Ableton, as well as the 6 notes with which you program/play your drum patterns. Just make sure you select the right program for each song.

Hope that helps,
Albert

Hi Albert,

i try to explain my setup:

i have a DRUMRACK in Ableton Live. In this rack each single midi note matches a sound
i have about 50\60 notes\sounds in this Ableton Drum Rack.

with the roland spd sx i do this :

drum bank 1
pad 1 - midi note 1
pad 2 - midi note 2
pad 3 - midi note 3
pad 4 - midi note 4
pad 5 - midi note 5
pad 6 - midi note 6

when i trigger pad 3 ( for example ) a sound play in ableton live Drum Rack ( corresponding to note 3 ) via Midi

drum bank 2
pad 1 - midi note 7
pad 2 - midi note 8
pad 3 - midi note 9
pad 4 - midi note 10
pad 5 - midi note 11
pad 6 - midi note 12

drum bank 3
pad 1 - midi note 13
pad 2 - midi note 14
pad 3 - midi note 15
pad 4 - midi note 16
pad 5 - midi note 17
pad 6 - midi note 18

etc....

So...i need to have for each drum bank on nord Drum differents midi note on his pads
understand Albert ?

I really can not believe this can not be done on nord drum 3p :(

thanks so much

Ah! you're using the 3P to trigger sounds in Ableton, I thought you were using Ableton to play sounds on the 3P, sorry!
Either way, the MIDI notes are set globally on the Nord drum 3P. If I understand correctly, you want to swap the set of sounds in your drumrack in Ableton, using the 3P as a sort of a remote control. I don't know if it is possible to organize drumsounds in drumrack into seperate kits. If so, perhaps you can make use of the program change that the Nord drum 3P sends whenever you dial in another drumkit/program on it. Check if Drumrack is able to respond to that, make sure the 3P sends Program change : in MIDI settings, set PC to Send (PC.S) or Send and receive (PC.Sr).

Hi Albert :)

thanks for your help.
What I want to do (which I did with Roland spdsx) is a bit different from what you say but probably my bad English does not help you understand.
Anyway I solved using the midi transposer in ableton.

However it is really absurd that such an expensive car does not have the ability to assign any midi notes and midi channel channels to each drumkit. That made me very disappointed.

bye
Claudio.

I can't seem to figure this out. I am sending midi to my interface and receiving via my interface but on the receiving end I am getting Channel 1 triggered with the other Channels. Any suggestions?
I am just trying to record onto Logic using Midi.. I am new at this.
