How to give the Nord Drum 2 per-channel reverb.

Postby rhombus » 10 Apr 2016, 01:41

I'm sure we've all seen some of the videos and preliminary stuff about the Nord Drum 3 and 3P. Many of us wish we had the per-channel reverb. I use my own method for giving the Nord Drum 2 per-channel reverb, this will describe how I do it.

NOTE: You do give something up though, and that's stereo. Everything is mixed down to mono to make this work. In my opinion, gaining per-channel reverb while giving up stereo is a good deal.

I use a TC Electronic Hall Of Fame Mini Reverb:
http://www.tcelectronic.com/hall-of-fame-mini-reverb/

And a Berhinger Micromix MX400:
http://www.music-group.com/Categories/B ... 00/p/P0390

Some things to do with the TC HOF:
1) Download the TonePrint app from TC Electronic: http://www.tcelectronic.com/toneprint-editor/
2) Connect the TC HOF to your computer by USB and run the TonePrint app.
3) The app should recognize your HOF and give you an editor for all the parameters for the reverb, browse through all the ones they give you or make your own.
4) Absolute must: set the "Kill Dry" setting to "on", this will make the signal completely wet (will explain later)
optional) Set up the knob to increase "dynamix" and "release time" as the knob is turned up (you can turn off the effect entirely with the bypass switch)
5) Make sure you press the "Store To Pedal" button on the editor before disconnecting the USB.

Then on the Nord Drum 2:
1) Plug output 1 on the Nord Drum 2 into input 1 on the Micromix
2) Plug output 2 on the Nord Drum to into the input of the TC HOF Reverb
3) Plug the output of the TC HOF Reverb into input 2 on the Micromix
4) Plug the output of the Micromix to your amp/mixer/interface/etc
5) Find a kit you like.
6) Use the per-channel panning as a per-channel wet/dry knob. If you've set this up as I've described then panning of 20.0 will be completely dry and 0.20 will be completely wet. So instead of using the TC HOF's knob as our wet/dry, we're using each of the ND2's channel pan settings as our wet/dry. Get it?

Really, I can't say enough about TC's TonePrint pedals. If you ever wanted a pedal to be configurable in detail like a synthesizer (or your Nord Drum 2), then you'll want one of these TonePrint pedals. I use a Hall of Fame Mini mainly because it was cheaper than the regular sized version. The main difference between the Mini and the full sized version is that the full sized has a bunch of standard presets built onto the thing. But what they both have in common is only ONE TonePrint slot. All I ever use is the TonePrint slot and I only need one knob for sensitivity and release time so the Mini version is just fine.

I suppose that you can do the same but in stereo using the same principle if you use a stereo reverb pedal?

That's kinda faux-stereo, because the wet signal, say, from channel R on the ND2, thru a stereo reverb will result in an all-around stereo mix on two channels, of course processing only one channel from the Nord. You can indeed play with the wet/dry fx mix by the panning method suggested above. Panning every voice independtly, in the true sense of panning would only be possible with six outputs and the six sounds recorded on six mono channels, panned later in the mix wherever you please. I have my ND2 set up very much like @rhombus describes his rig; channel R is the fx channel routed thru an analog filter/drone box, a Red Panda Particle delay/pitch shifter and a Strymon Dig stereo double delay (set to mono in) on a pair of channels panned hard L and R, while the Nord's channel L processes the dry signal on a single mono channel. I have some of my kits set with the kick hard panned to the dry channel and the other five voices panned to the fx route. Would love to hack the ND2 somehow into a 6-output module by modding the trig ins but don't think that'd be very easy, if at all possible. It's a complex piece of gear and turning the trig ins into audio outs would definitely need a great deal hard-(re)wiring and PCB modding. And this maneuvre is just completely out of my league, nor I know of anyone who could handle it. Anyone has a nephew at Clavia's drum synth dept maybe? :)

Great idea, creative, basically using L/R balance for each channel of the ND2 as a wet/dry balance for your reverb/effect unit!

Thanks. I feel like giving up panning for reverb is worth it for the extra presence. Sometimes the ND2 can feel a bit thin in the mix compared to some of the other instruments I use. Reverb really helps with that. Also, it seems like Nord almost encourages this by labeling the outputs 1 & 2 rather than L & R ;)
