Hi,
I'm new to drum pads and sampling, but the norm drum 2 and pads has caught my eye and I prefer it to the Roland spd.
But, I need to be able to trigger my own samples, loops etc...live, as well as add drum sounds to my current acoustic set up,.
Is there a way to do this using the nd2, I guess I might need to link it to my MacBook, but I'm willing to do that...
Any advice?
Thanks,
Craig

Re: Drum 2 and sampling
Welcome! Indeed the ND2 is capable of sampling and its pretty straight forward. As long as you can connect it via midi to the sample source like a macbook, put it in midi local mode off which is shift+lower parameter+midi then scroll through to Lo.On and turn the knob to Lo.off. At this stage you can now set the sample source to midi notes for each pad. Midi notes for the pads are by default C5, D5, E5, F5, G5, A5 and they correspond with the 1-6 default layout.
I hope that is simple enough, I could prob explain easier but I just finished work. The ND2 is real easy to trigger samples once you know what to do

Hiyas,
Thanks for the reply.
I think it makes sense, you must forgive me, I'm brand new to sampling etc...
As a drummer and with no midi/sample experience, will it be simple enough to work out how to trigger my own sounds/tracks using the process you mentioned?
Is their a recommended simple programme I should use on my Mac?
Thanks again,
Craig

Re: Drum 2 and sampling
Thats all good. Triggering from the ND2 sends a midi note so the type of sample (and its limitations) depend entirely on what your sample source is. For instance, in Ableton you can trigger drum samples via drum rack or configure it to trigger an entire song.
The set-up you choose really depends on your needs but to trigger samples keep in mind the sample source is what is generating the sound not the ND2. So a usb-midi from ND2 into your macbook and then audio-out from the macbook would work - just make sure you buy a reputable midi-usb converter (cheap ones cause issues).
I have used Ableton and FLstudio so far and both work great. If you want a detailed breakdown step by step Im happy to help, just need to know what your set-up is and software etc. (although I am only familiar with ableton and flstudio) Hope that helps - I recommend reading the manual time and time again, always finding new tricks in it

Hi Stoat,
Awesome news,thanks.
Currently right now all I hsve is a new MacBook Pro and I'm looking to get everything else.
It's to use in a live situation with an acoustic kit. I'll be using the nord 2 sounds through the nord pad but will also want to sampke my own sounds to trigger, such as aircraft noises or phobes ringing or whole sax parts etc... That I can either run with a click track and activate by hitting the pad or just by hitting the pad at various parts of a song. Hope this simplistic description nakes sense!
As I said I'm new to this but want to learn, so any equipment/software or advice you don't mind sharing, I'd be so pleased.
Thanks,
Craig

Re: Drum 2 and sampling
So you can sample live acoustic drums or instruments?
I'm looking to ask as I'm a musical theatre drummer and looking for something to playing or sample Tillamook or marimba? Also can you download from this website the different sounds like orchestra or so on to the ND2?

Re: Drum 2 and sampling
Hi!
No, the ND2 isn't able to play back samples, it's a synthesizer, which can mimic acoustic percussion instruments to a certain degree.. including marimba sound!
(The OP wanted to trigger samples that are stored on his mac, which can be done when you connect pads, or the Nord Pad to the ND2, then connect the ND2 to the mac thru MIDI)
Cheers,
Albert

Thanks for the reply!
So the instrument banks can't be downloaded on to it play freely! That is the reason I was going to get one! because I want to play say a note on a timpani (on the pad) and use it instead of a real one
So disappointing!
Thanks though

Re: Drum 2 and sampling
Last question promise!!!
If I was to play the marimba on it, it obvo only has 6 pads. Can you buy 2 more pads to make an octave??

Re: Drum 2 and sampling
You can't play samples from the Nord sample library with the ND2, it cannot record or play back recorded audio samples, unlike eg the SPD -S . but the ND2 can mimic timpani quite well!
You can only connect one Nord Pad, or 6 single drum pads,
To play marimba you can connect a MIDI keyboard, or a MIDI device with multiple pads, but it will be a monophonic marimba
