Add hihat-pedal to ND3P rig

Postby simpa » 27 Nov 2017, 11:15

I want to add a hihat pedal to my 3p rig. It is just for practice, so I don't need to have stellar sound from it.

My choices are either to get some pedal that can transmit midi trigs and just trig one of the pads that way, or to get some kind of stand alone electric hihat pedal that generates sound on it's own and then just add that signal with a small mixing desk.

I don't really like any of the options but I need to be able to practice drums in my appartment and my nord drum is doing electric drumkit-duties part time.

Have any of you guys thought about this?

Hi Simpa!

With a hihat pedal you usually want the position of the foot pedal to influence the sound, to mimic open/closed position of real hats. These pedals are not compatible with the Nord Drum models as you may already know, in the sense that the open/closed position will not have any effect on the sound.

It would require some complex MIDI trickery to let the position of a foot pedal determine the note length parameters on the Nord Drum, not impossible but not really practical. So, I think if you want open/close sound and feel, find yourself a second hand drum brain and hihat pedal, use that unit generate the sound. Exactly as you suggested. Check the specifications if the drum unit reacts to half open positions of the pedal, if you want a more natural response. Perhaps someone else here can give you better suggestions what to look for..

There are two options on the Nord drum itself that might help you to get a hihat like sound:
Using 2 pads: create one pad with the sound of a closed hihat, and one pad with a sound of an open hihat. Then define a mute group so that these 2 pads exclude each other, after you’ve hit the pad with the open hihat sound, you can stop the sound by hitting the other pad.
Using 1 pad: create a sound where the length of the hihat sound is dynamically controlled, so that if you hit it harder it will sound longer. I found this working quite ok, and got used to the playing style quickly..

Good luck!
Cheers,
Albert
