Speaker and mixer recommendation for C2

Postby tckelly47 » 07 Jul 2012, 23:40

Hi,

I recently purchased a Nord C2 - I jumped on the 4th of July 15% discount at Musicians Friend. In any event, I will be running the C2 in mono to a mixer(Allen & Heath or Soundcraft) and then to an RCF ART725A powered speaker. If I run a 1/4" cable from the left out of the C2 to the mixer would that be optimal or should I consider running a 1/4" cable from the high level output of the C2 to the mixer. Would there be any advantage to doing that? I will always be running in mono for myself(thru powered speaker) and thru the house(mono as well) - I do not have the luxory of real estate in the small clubs I play in. I have not purchased the RCF speaker yet but tried one with my Yamaha DPiano and it sounded great. Any thoughts here on the RCF powered speaker for use with the C2 or are there any other alternatives that I should consider. I would like something portable - a real leslie would be great but not at all practicle for spacing on a stage with 5 other members. Also, any recommendations here for a mixer - I was thinking about either the Allen & Heath Zed 10 or the Soundcraft EPM6. Lastly - I have a Yamaha FC7 volume pedal lying around - will that be adequate enough as an expression pedal in terms of throw? Any thoughts?

Tom

I can't say anything sensible about your other questions, but the Yamaha FC-7 is supported and you should get full throw if you select the right pedal type (YA) in the System menu.

Yamaha FC-7 is a great pedal for the C2. It's probably the best overall, because it is lightweight and cheap to replace.

I use the qsc k12 speaker with my C2 when I can't bring my Leslie 3300. It sounds great for the most part, and there is no mixer necessary. If you have more than one keyboard, the k12 has two inputs.

Congratulations on the C2!

Have you checked out the RCF HD12 yet? Those are the speakers I've been eyeing up.

I did not even know of it's existence until you mentioned it. Ideally, I would like to have 15" speaker because I will be playing my CP300 through it and want to capture the full range. The RCF stuff is really good quality - I rented one(RCF 725A) and it is very pleasing to the ears sonically. Do you play your NS2 in stereo or mono on stage - assuming you play out.

I was wondering what you thought of the QSC K Series stuff? I hear a lot of people on this forum giving it high marks. I do know that the RCF stuff is in another league compared to QSC and yet I do not hear it mentioned on this forum. Also, would a 12" with a small sub be better than one 15" powered cab?

I can not locate a K2 in the states - after scouring the net. How would they perform in a live band mix. Would they cut through the mix?

I really like the QSC K12. I use it for jazz/funk organ trio where I play the bass, and it works even with a fairly loud drummer.
It has 2 xlr/quarter inch inputs with individual volume controls, and stereo RCA input, so it could work for a variety of things- e.g. wedding ceremony where both keyboard and microphone are needed. It also has a vocal boost control which accentuates the mids a bit in a nice way.

The K12 is pretty amazingly loud and clear in my opinion. It's a bit directional, but if I set it about 6 feet behind me on the floor vertically, it sounds great on stage and in the audience. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I would also put a vote in for the EV zlx12P speakers. they are incredibly loud (1000W) and clear. portable and clean looking. I either use two of them in stereo about 4' behind me or one on the floor vertically as dlargent uses his k12. they also have 2 xlr/.25" inputs and a out which combines both channels into a xlr for the house if you need reinforcement. I use it for funk, soul, pop, rock, jazz, r&b and have never needed to go up louder than -2db gain in any band situation with loud drummers, bass horns etc. I do have keyboards that have hot outputs though so I bet that helps The best part of these speakers is that you can get two for the price of one k12. Just my two cents. I got two of them for $670 including shipping

The Allen and Heath ZED10 is a great little mixer with stereo xlr outs for the monitors and aux send for each channel (1/4" mono output) If you are just using this set up for the c2, I would recommend getting a radial jdi and using either the 1/4" outs or the xlr outs into the stage monitors. i used one of these di's last week and they really make some of the harshness of the leslie sim/drive blend nicely like the wood of a leslie does.

Of course the best option imho would be to get a real leslie 145 and put the c2 through there... if you are only playing organ that is. if you have other sounds and keys in the mix, the stereo stage monitor is your best option to cover the sonic range that modern keyboards put out
