LESLIE STUDIO 12

Postby Quai34 » 26 Nov 2014, 08:30

Hi,
The release and recent test in keyboard magazine of the new Leslie studio 12 makes me think a lot about buying one, dimensions and weight seem to be exactly what I was waiting for for a long time.....but anyone knows how I would connect to my C2 and still using the half moon switch. According to hammond website they have an 11 pin cable in option, is it the way to go, I don't want to use their footswitch system?
Sincerely

Couldn't say for sure, but if the 11-pin is wired as standard the Nord Half moon should work as normal. Best check with an expert, though ... The Nord 11-pin output works a 3300 OK, doesn't it?

I use the nord c2 and Leslie 3300 with half moon and 11 pin cable. I think the cable was overpriced. But it all works together. The only cables to the speaker are 11 pin and power.

Don't forget, if you don't have a half-moon, the Nord can work the 11-pin thru a foot-switch, too. It's on the menu. The 3300 also has a 1/4 mono jack for a simple foot-switch, too.

There does not appear to be an 11-pin on the Studio 12. Speed control and input are 1/4 inch. There is an 11-pin cable adapter, to two phone plugs available, I think.

I think I am going to pull the trigger on the Studio 12 soon... I have been trying every single alternative to a real leslie 145 over the past 4 years and nothing compares to my speaker which stays in my basement now as the haul is just too much for me. I think a lightweight 12" lower rotor, lightweight cabinet and a compacted design may be the closest thing to the real deal for me... How are there no videos of people testing this thing and playing it on youtube?? too new?

I have also been in conctact with the guy who makes the pancake type leslie called the spin doctor. he uses vintage parts and the design allows anyone who has a 122 or 147 amp to slide it into the cabinet and run the 70lb cabinet just like a full size rotary cabinet. it has a 12" bass rotor and ported cabinet. A true horn rotor and you get to use your vintage amp if you have one as i do. The amp really does something to the sound and I just don't think that for blues and soul, you can get the warmth out of a tube preamp and solid state amp.

I'll report back when I have tested either the spin doctor or the studio 12. I don't know which to go for...

<i>" I think the cable was overpriced."</i>

The 11-pin cable doesn't age well, either. Stiffens badly over time. And it kinks easily. But remember, when the plastic housings on the connectors crack, (and they will) Hammond Suzuki sells the screw-on caps separately, and that'll save you from buying a new 11-pin cable.
Metal-cap connectors, and good-quality flexible cable with a thicker jacket would be nice, but would probably make the cable a $300 item. I'll ask my wife, who sells that electrical stuff, what it would cost.

I just got off the phone with Hammond, they told me they've made some changes to the Sudio 12 cabinet material, and will be producing them next month.

Yes, I was wrong about the 11-pin. Just 1/4" jacks on the thing, apparently. The manual is not forthcoming, but I assume the socket for the supplied dual footswitch is a TRS, given that there are two switches on the thing. Possibly the Nord half moon will plug straight in there? But if you get the footswitch, might as well use that.

You could take the high-level out or one channel of the normal audio out jacks on the Nord to get the signal into it.

I think I see an 11-pin to double phone plug adapter cable on offer. 11-pin plugs into organ, on the other end the mono plug feeds the amp and a TRS works the rotors. Or, as you say, you could plug them in individually. If the Studio 12 takes a guitar as input the L or R output on the Nord should be plenty hot.

Has anyone had an opportunity to use the studio 12 yet? Does it work with the Nord leslie switch? Also, what do you think about using it for small venues. I understand there are many variables which would influence this but generally, do you think it would be loud enough>
