C2D Treble/sudden volume change

Postby 2xbasssist » 06 Sep 2012, 22:48

Dear Forum User's:

As I posted earlier in the forum, I own a C2. And today, I "upgraded" to C2D.

I has very happy about it, until I detected a very strange volume/eq problem: it makes sudden volume changes depending the notes that I play. Specially, when playing big chords will full drawbar setting. Also, if I play for example, bass and chords in the swell manual, the sound turns lower and with no treble. If I keep on playing, and change the left hand to do the bass in the lower manual while keeping the chords with my right hand in the swell manual, the volume suddenly increases and the treble appears again.

At first, I thought that it was a volume pedal problem, because I had a problem once with that unit (I have the Nord Pedal Keys). I tried different pedal configurations (korg, Fatar, etc) but nothing happened. So, I unplugged the swell pedal's cable, but problem persist. It came with the factory 1.04 Software, so I didn't need to update it.

Any Ideas? Please help!

Thank You!

Try the following.
Get the the earlier version the nord home page.
Load it and see if the problem goes away.

The reload the 2.0 version and check if the problem reappears.
If it does send a mail to Nord and report the bug.
Try and experiment as much as possible to find out what you do that triggers the problem.

I have a C2 with 2.0 and will try it during the weeken.

Did you buy a new C2d or did you load the version 2.0 of the C2 OS onto your old C2?

Hi. I now have 2 organs: C2 and C2D.

I have my "old" C2 with the lattest upgrade: OS 2.0. And, on the other hand, my new C2D, came from factory with OS 1.04.

I did more tests today:

Firstly, I changed from the C2D factory's "Vintage 3" sound to a "Vintage 2". This last one B3 Sound, was the one that I was using on my C2.

It seems that I was talking about 2 different issues:

1) The treble decrease when playing left hand in the swell manual, was more noticeable in the preset called "evil ways", that has a very loud "percussion" sound. If I add my left hand in the same manual, the percussive sound vanish to copy the behavior of a real Hammond (that is what I'm taking as a conclusion). I'm not very sure if in the C2 was so noticeable.

2) The sudden increase/decrease changes, seems to be (for the 2nd time) the low quality potentiometer that has the Nord Pedal Keys volume pedal. Last year, I had a very similar problem when playing with my C2. I showed it to my technician, and he said that the potentiometer was not working well. I wrote to Nord, and the local distributor sent me a new potentiometer to replace the other one, and problem solved. Now it is not working again. I will give my volume pedal again to my technician to see if its the same problem.

Thank You flmc59!

Get a high qualit cermet pot as a replacment. Hopefully you are not limited to Nord spares.
I use this type in my earnie ball pedal. And they will wear out not matter how good they are. It is a hard life.
The Hammond B3 solution using a condenser radio type system or ldr (L-100) was brilliant. No way they could wear out.

I read in more than one place that cermet potentiometers are more stable with regards to temperature (not so relevant in a pedal, but relevant in some circuits), however they last less end-to-end rotations than graphite ones (and that is the reason to use them in trim pots).
I have no idea if that is true for all products available (probably not), but it is maybe worth looking in the specs (the technical sheets usually quote the life of the component) before buying to avoid ending with one that last even less that the one you've got.

UPDATE:

This is weird: I test the Volume Pedal back on my C2, and there is no problem with it. I played for a long time, and there are no sudden volume changes.

I connect it to the new C2D, and suddenly, the volume goes crazy! In the C2D's SYSTEM Menu, where you select the "swell pedal type", there's a visual percentage, so you can chose which brand of swell pedal behaves the best. If I'm playing for example, at 74% of volume, the things turns to 0% or almost 0%. To get back to the volume that I was playing, I have to press back again the volume pedal. You know something? I will upload a Video on YouTube to show you guys my problem. I'll give you the link on a next post as soon as I upload it.

By the way, I wrote to "Nord Support" but a few days ago, but I haven't received and answer yet.

Thank you for your comments!

Double check questions

Are you using the same cable and volume pedal on both organs.

Try and "wiggle" the teleplugg a little when connected to the c2d and observe the volume percentage does it change.

Maybe a hardware issue?

PROBLEM SOLVED: I took the Nord Swell Pedal to my technician, and he did some measures with his "tester" while pressing the swell pedal from 0 to 100 and the conclusion was that the potentiometer was worn out.

It seems that the C2D is more sensitive than the C2, in terms of "swell pedal nuances".

Fortunately, he had a Dunlop's Wah Pedal potentiometer, and he did the replacement. Now its working perfectly!

I own my old C2 for about 2 years, and the Nord Pedal Keys 27 (that came with the swell pedal) for about a year and a half. The factory potentiometer "died" this year in January. Nord people sent me through our local distributor a spare potentiometer (the same mexican made) as a replacement. So, it started working on February. From February to September is such a short lifetime period, don't you think? I use the Swell Pedal mostly in ballads, and I don't play everyday. I'm not Rhoda Scott!.

Talking about Rhoda Scott, to show my appreciation to your concern about this issue, I will send you this video as a gift (please take a look at his/her swell pedal).
(I hope that you don't find it offensive to her)

Thank You!

P.S.: I will write again to Nord Support to report this bad quality components. The Nord "Pedal Keys 27", is not a cheap product, so you at least can expect good quality parts.
