Will samples announced at NAMM be ready for Messe?

Postby Mr. Marko » 18 Mar 2017, 22:59

I don't can't locate mention of the "electric piano layer samples" on the Nord website that were announced at NAMM 2017...has this been dropped or are they still working on it?

My theory is still that Roland has shut them down in order tp preserve those sounds for their new digital piano. Roland may already be grouchy about the recent crop of MKS-20 emulations (Keyscape, GospelMusicians etc) - they have just released Roland Cloud as well with several (IMHO not so great) romplers of classic Roland synths (D50, Juno etc) - so they may be actively protecting/restricting their IP. This may be why no one has actually circuit modelled a D50 yet. All these classic sounds keep showing up in new Roland products.

Just my opinion, although hopefully I'm wrong because I would love a multi-layer MKS20, JD-800 etc in my NP2.

How old is the MKS-20? If it's more than 20 years there is no IP anymore, all the patents will have expired.
Roland can't prevent anybody copying-reproducing-sampling the sound, but it may (and probably will) have retained copyrights to the name, so nobody can sell anything explicitly named "MKS-20".
That may be the problem, as I recall the initial press release by Clavia stated the precise name and origin of the samples.

Of course, all of this is pure speculation and there may be hundreds of other reasons the library is being postponed.
Anyway, the fact that the latest updates for the Stage mostly regarded EPs and Synth Pianos slots, makes me hopeful we will see those sounds sooner or later.

Just curious how you arrived at 20 years? Also I'm betting Roland has a larger legal dept than Nord. Yes it could just be about the trademarked names as you say. Arturia slightly changed names on their Roland and Moog emulations recently I'm guessing for similar reasons.

Roland went after an MT32 clone years ago but lost because they had not properly trademarked the factory PCM set at the time. And all the D50 Romplers out there avoid naming it.

20 years is the duration of any patent all over the world, regardless of who submitted it. The MKS-20 is mid-eighties I think, so for sure the patents covering its technology have expired, and anyone can copy-use it.

However copyright, brands, model names, trademarks etc have no expiration date, and it looks like Roland is one of the companies that most aggressively protects its brand, as you mentioned.

Whatever. We cannot know, just wait and see.

If it's about naming the samples, it's about trademarks, not patents. But that should be irrelevant.

The HAMMOND, Rhodes, and Wurlitzer names are still trademarked, and Nord has zero problems just naming the samples differently ("SparkleTop", "Nefertiti", etc.). Yamaha has had a "Rubba Roads" that is obviously a Rhodes piano for decades (the "Rhodes" trademark belonged to Roland from the early 80s until what, ten years ago?).

It mentions the originals in its literature, with the disclaimer that the names are owned by their respective trademark holders and are used for reference purposes only.

I cannot imagine that the naming of the samples is the hold-up.

At the moment Nord seems to have a general problem with creating samples.

The Steinway No. 1 was released in XL quality only (L,M,S are still missing). And we have not heard of the Royal Grand (Non-3D) yet, which was announced for this winter.

One would love to hope that the problems are due to a new sample format for the soon-to-be-released Nord Stage 3 not being finalised yet, and it not making any sense to finish production on the samples before the new architecture is completely fixed in software.

But that, of course, is entirely wishful thinking…what with Musikmesse coming up and so on…
