Unexplainable change to one octave lower (solved!)

Postby rudiratlos » 16 Jun 2017, 13:44

Hi all

After nearly two years I have a problem with my Nord Electro 5: :(

When I play my instrument from time to time (during playing - maybe especially when hitting keys with a harder attack - I’m not sure) suddenly some strange changes happen, such as that the sound is an octave deeper (very annoying when you play live) or in the display appears „Store programm to“. And surely this happens without touching any buttons, only playing on the keys.

The strange events happens sporadic, about once twice in an hour. I had this problem never before.

Has anybody this problem. I would be very glad if someone had an idea how to solve the issue. :?:

Sounds like there is dirt under the respective buttons that occasionally triggers them when the vibration from your fingers is just right.

First treatment would be to hit the "store" and the octave down buttons a couple of dozen times, repeatedly, to dislodge any dirt. Then maybe blow compressed air in there. (Keyboard turned off, naturally.)

Hi analogica

thanx for your tipps; I tried your first tipp and hope that it will help. Anyway I've played for one hour after the treatment without changing octave. I'll watch further and hope that the "therapy" is steady successful.
:thanx:

Still the problem with the unexplainable changes of the settings; accidentally changing like: suddenly enables chorus, or switch on the upper part which is normally unused in the used program, or the store instruction appears in the display, one part plays an octave deeper; everything during playing only the keys without touching anything different.
I can't believe that dust under the responsible buttons should be the problem, because this should be related to so many buttons and my instrument is standing in a clean dust free room, always covered with a dust cover.
Should I try a factory reset? I would be very thankful for helping suggestions or explanations of the problem.

It is unlikely this is a SW related issue, so Factory Reset or Firmware updates wouldn't help.

Could be instead some connector between the boards that is a bit loose and needs to be reinserted (but you need to open your NE to check that and/or have it serviced by the official assistance)

Hi maxpiano first of all thanx for your fast answer;
I recognised a further issue just in the moment:
When I start my NE5, it appears in the start window the following text: "HWRev 1.0 - 14" and then the hint "Keyboard Calibration Error. Please press exit."
After pressing the button exit, the normal start window appears with the actual software 1.42 and then the normal program windows appears. Does this thing have to do with the other described problem?

That seem to be another symptom of a potential HW/cabling problem, yes... I think service is more than an option for you, sorry

Lowering of the voice might indicate a puberty issue? Any stray hairs on the bottom of the board?

Mr. TheGman, you're a great jokester, thank you for your wise tipp.
but seriously, the issue is solved; by Thoman repair; reason was indeed a loose flat ribbon connector as maxpiano assumed. Thanx for your help!

reseating the key calibration will remove that error message, but will have nothing to do with some of your front panel buttons seemingly having a mind of their own

if that initial problem disappeared for you since that time, I believe that it's just Murphy's Law playing tricks on you -- and the other behavior will revisit you at the worst possible moment, onstage in front of huge crowd...
