Stage 2 isn't LEVEL using Nord Keyboard Stand EX (legs)

Postby wurliboy » 07 Feb 2013, 00:20

Hello out there! I'm a new member, but I've been reading and learning a lot from this forum for the past month. Thanks to you all for your ideas and insights- you strongly influenced me to purchase a new NS2- woo-hoo!. I'm also longtime happy NL2 user.

I just installed the Nord Keyboard Stand EX, the legs that attach directly to the bottom of the keyboard. I carefully followed the instructions, making sure to attach the crossbars to the back legs, the ones with no ring nuts. It took me a minute to figure out how to attach and tighten the cross bars, but I'm confident that I did everything correctly- the stand is extremely stable. The problem is, when I set the keyboard upright, it wasn't level. The keyboard felt like it was angled backward, with the front of the keys higher than they should be. It immediately felt funny and was quite hard to play! I checked my floor to make sure it was level- it is. I carefully re-read the directions and checked my work- it all seemed correct and solid. BTW, I'm using the shorter leg attachments for playing seated.

After some trial and error, I determined that the way to get the keyboard to sit closest to what felt correct to me was to remove the ring nuts from the front legs and put them on the back legs with the crossbars too. Has anyone else with a NS2 had this problem or found a solution?

And, what are the little black sticky-backed inserts that come with the stand? Are they meant to help level it in some way? There's no mention of them in the installation manual.

Interestingly, I took a level (the measurement device) to several pianos, including my Steinway grand and learned that the keys are not meant to be level (parallel to the ground) in their neutral (not played) position. Instead, they angle a bit down, from front to back. (That is, the front of the key is higher than the back). When fully depressed (played) they sit essentially level. I tried to match this scenario on my Stage 2 in my adjustments and it feels way better now.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Are you sure you use them right? I use the ones on the picture, on the side close to the back, and the "normal" ones on the front!

I have also wondered what the black things are..

Edit: didn't read the whole thing before i replied.

Thanks for your reply, Thomazi. Like you, I'm using the legs with the ring nuts in the back, with the crossbars attached to them. I think that's the opposite of what the directions say, but it seems most correct to me.

Anyone else have any idea what the little black things included in the directions bag are? Shims of some sort?

I don't use one of these stands, but my guess is the sticky inserts are to stop marking the bottom case?
Mine has two parallel marks running front to back from sitting on an X stand!
