some helps with chords on Marcus Miller song

Postby Quai34 » 02 Feb 2015, 08:17

Hi All,
I play this song, I've done all the programs on my stage II but I'm still not sure about the chords used on the intro, from 0.00 to 1.25?
After that I have all the chords and melody, any help ?

Hi, thanks I will try it tomorrow, when you write M you paean major rights? And when you say (sus) you mean sus4 which means a fourth instead of the third?

Real Book Standard jazz notation is

C-7 for minor
Cj7 (or C triangle) for major.

Cm7 is definitely minor.

If I see a capital "M", I get confused. (but I sometimes get confused easily. ;) )

And in jazz, a "sus" chord can easily mean sus 2, 4, AND 6 at the same time. It's up to the player's interpretation. ;)

Indeed a cool tune. We play it in another version just starting with the bass. But you already got help from the folks here. Good luck!

I particularly like the F/B (B-9,+11 if you like lol) cord in that tune. It sounds kind of Miles Davis style))

Ok I agree, usually in the real book, they omit the major, when it's a major chords, they just write the chord that's it and they put minus when it's a minor chord. C is C major, C,E,G. C7 is C major but with a 7th that is minor, in that case Bb....
If they write Cmaj7 it's usually used to major the 7th, so C, E, G and B, not Bb.....
To have an altered 9th, 5th, they usually use b or #, C7b5 or C7#5....
But as I have seen a lot of notation used, that why I was asking. For the real book, usually when they want the 4th to be suspended they right sus4 consider that it's the 4th that is suspended and that is going to be resolved to the third.....When they want the second to be suspended they write Sus2
And if they just use sus, like in C7 sus it all the chord that is suspended, which in this case is Bb triangle 7/C, bass of C....a chord of Bb on a roots of C....
But thank for the chords, it was your M capital that confused me as in the real book they use it only the major7, for example, I maj7, ionien mode, Cmaj7....not sure they even use the M in capital. They use M in capital in the new real book or some real book that has been re written....using an M in capital today that it's a minor chord has always confused me....little m for minor....
But you are right you can have also see Dsusb9, which is considered as a minor chord
And I agree on the 3rdand the 4th not being played altogether unless it's some clusters chords.
The fact that it sounds very Miles Davis is that it was composed by Marcus Miller for his friend David Sandborn and Marcus Miller composed almost the entire album of Miles Davis "Tutu". I was very lucky to see him and to talk to him in France in July 2006 in Toulon, very modest guy....
Hanks again....bye
