Silk-screened function list

Postby PScooter63 » 29 Mar 2018, 18:37

Because I've been so pleased with my 4HP over the years, I've never really looked at the newer Electros/Stages until now... so pardon me if this has already been discussed (my search-fu is weak on topics like this).

Was there ever a reason given why Clavia stopped printing their quick-reference directly on the instrument? That saved my bacon a couple of times.

Because on newer Nords you have a decently sized screen giving you all the info in large, friendly letters.

But you might be able to do it on your own right? I think I have seen kits to do that at Stapples....

Or just keep a copy of the .pdf manual at hand on your mobile phone or tablet, for a (much more complete) quick reference ;)

Ten years ago, we didn’t all have mobile devices to access permanent online manual repositories at any time.

Yes, thus, being old school from 40 years ago, I have all my manuals printed when they came in PDFs file only....I know, not trees friendly sorry...

Well, at least you can say you are in a land which has plenty of trees

But, besides trees, weight and space, the advantage of .pdf is also the ability to quickly search for terms, something which is more difficult, at least time consuming, to do on paper ;)

Ok, so to clarify... the original question was not about mitigating the actual loss... an electronic or hard copy of the manual is not the same use case.

In a live performance situation on stage, whipping out your phone or tablet (which also entails any number of keystrokes and screen-staring to access the data you’re looking for) is slow, and rather unprofessional looking.

I was just curious whether any forum veterans recalled a previous discussion about Nord’s decision to remove the quick reference...

I almost always have the iPad on stage with me, and keep an archive of manuals in iBooks. I do not consider the ability to consult manuals on the job unprofessional—on the contrary. :-)

If I need to consult the manual during a gig, looking weird while scrolling through a document on the iPad is probably the least of my worries. (Had that situation once with a KX-88 that was set to a weird mode.)

The quick reference makes sense if you have a 2 digits numeric display only, so that is the only way for the user to know which number corresponds to which menu item; for keyboards having an alphanumeric LCD display (or even a graphic Oled one) and multiple menu buttons. with the name of each menu on them, I don't find it strange they thought a printed reference is not really needed any more, you just need to know your instrument and logic organization of menus.
