Organizing program changes

Postby mwheels » 19 Sep 2016, 17:23

I am looking for a way to organize my program changes for live performance. I used to hand write my program changes next to the songs on my set lists. Now that I'm using 2 Nords (NE5 / Lead A1) in my gig rig with the same numerical program format, it it gets confusing on which patch goes to which keyboard. Curious as to if someone has come up with a system either on paper or iPad to simplify patch changes between songs in a live setting.

Pablo, I think he is looking for something like a setlist to be used for both keyboards simultaneously. My solution would be to have an external controller with a patch that calls the respective patch on each instrument at the same time.

IE External controller calls patch 1 on the NE5 and Patch 3 on the Lead A1. I'm sure there may be some sort of software that runs on Ipad that would provide this type of functionality.
Keyboards:
  • NS2 EX Compact 73
  • Hammond SK2
  • Roland VCombo VR-09
  • Roland A800-Pro
  • Behringer Motor 49
  • Alesis Q88

Hi,

There are several threads around this forum about program changes (PC) and the (iOS) app SetlistMaker.
I'm using it for sending out PC's to my NS2 and NE4D.
I'm not sure what program changes are used for the Nord Lead A1.

It takes some time setting it up, but it saves you a lot of time during a gig. I wouldn't play without it anymore.

Hi Bart,

speaking of questions about SLM, I spent some considerable amount of time typing in lyrix. Then when my ipad or SLM (not sure which it was) told me there was an available update, I went for it and lost everything. I should add that I inherited a Gen 2 iPad some years ago, I am NOT a sophisticated ipad user (hate Apple products with a passion) and have never used this PITA device for anything but Nord Beat, SLM and my Qu-Pac mixer app.

1) perhaps there is someplace to look for these files?
2) perhaps there is some way to avoid this happening again?

bless, pablo

The same happened to me..... You have to make sure that you are synchronizing it with SLM data base..... I had to restart my iPad due to issues and lost all my setting.... Sent a request to Arlo, the creator of SLM and he went me through very efficiently....

Hey Pablo,

Sad to hear you've lost your data.

1)
On the ipad itself (the filesystem) you are unable to look into. Unless it's jailbroken.
Maybe you have a backup of the ipad itself? (that takes me to bullet 2).

2)
To prevent this in the future, make a backup of the ipad using icloud backup or connect it to a MAC/PC with itunes installed.
From there you can easily create a backup!

Oh how I'd like to have a written set of directions for using my NE5D & NE4D with Set List Maker. And yes, EVERY time Arlo updates the app, things go nuts. Yet, he does figure out what to do - but that's not easy as many of us have grown dependent on the app.

So Bart (Berretje); I'd love some direction. Tried it a couple of years ago and decided not for now. But it would be a GREAT help with the new NE5D. And Pablo, your suggestion months ago about using the SLM on the NE5D was perfect. My only issue is must have a PC to connect and move things around. Or am I missing something? Besides, Set Lists can change on the fly - & unless I am making those changes ... it puts me in a HOLD ON & WAIT mode with the band.

And Pablo, Arlo Leach's Set List Maker app is also on Android. But like Bart said, any issue I have had with the app Arlo has been good enough to explain, work out, fix/update, etc. No more NOTEBOOKS! Oh, for me, I created pdf files for ALL lyrics and anything else and avoid the copy & paste for 98% of the songs. And ALL those pdfs are on my hard drive. Plus the backups, etc. Yes, I've lost a few things, but not much.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/directions!

Just a quick idea if you don't want to use an app:
Make a setlist for the NE5 and when you name the songs, put the corresponding program changes for the Lead in the names of the songs on that setlist.

I've  integrated a laptop in my setup shortly since I started playing in a band/live. It's running Bome Midi translator and is connected to my 2 keyboards and a Midi controller. I've programmed one of the push able encoders to send an arbitrary Midi number to Bome. The program then converts that to the appropriate patch changes for the keyboards. It sends them when know push that encoder. That way I can also queue the next song for rapid switching.

While I shunned the concept of integrating a computer in my setup for fear of it failing out Bome has in my experience been very reliable. The only time the setup has failed at am unfortunate time was when the computer-less Midi backup line I had bugged and made everything not work (old Midi box broke). I haven't had it functional nor needed ever since.

It also widely expanded the stuff I could do with Midgoi. The flexibility is pretty amazing.
