Organ swell

Postby BuckW » 17 Jul 2017, 13:56

Reading the (fine) manual for the stage 3 explains the organ swell pedal input as well as the fact that the tone changes as well as the volume.

Does it send midi drawbar increments as well as volume messages? Not mentioned. My concern is for recording and playback.

Drawbars CCs are sent when you move the drawbars, not the swell pedal; the effect on the timbre mentioned there is not a change in drawbars settings but the emulation of the original Hammond swell pedal behavior; check the list of CCs at the end of the manual.

Rechecked the CCs at the end of the manual, nothing about swell.

You are actually right, seems CC#4 (Organ Swell on NS2) is disappeared from NS3 MIDI implementation... quite strange.

I guess if you set the control pedal to also act as swell pedal ( a setting in the menu, also known from the older models), it will send out CC11 that normally are used for expression.

Of course it does, but if you use the Swell Pedal input on NS2 you get a CC#4 so you actually can manage 2 control pedals independently. Seems on NS3 they have removed one i.e. swell can only be used internally as such (?).

Or maybe must a typo in teh list of MIDI CCs, since in the Extern Menu they still write:

Device Midi Panel A/B
For each panel it can be determined whether to send data generated by the modulation wheel, control (expression) pedal, aftertouch and swell pedal. if any of these should not generate Midi data, turn its setting to Off.
Range for Wheel, A.T, Expr and Swell is: On (Default), Off

so apparently the Swell pedal sends MIDI data when set to ON and I bet it sends CC #4 ;)

No, Control Pedal (Expression) = CC11 ( line 6 on the midi appendix chart)

Yes and so Swell Pedal = ??? Check NS2 manual and on it you see it is CC#4.

To be more clear: that has to do with the physical Swell Pedal (input) not the function you assign to the SweelPedal or the CtrlPedal via System menu. I have used it as CC#4 in Mainstage so I know what I talk about, you can even select whether to send it or not on the Extern Menu..

Ah, yes, now I understand, I think  . We can agree until we have recieved a NS3 ( mine are in order, but think it will be a while). But I also think there are a couple of typos and bugs, both in the manual and in this early OS.

Yes I tend to think it is just a matter of typos due to the hurry to issue the manual and maybe also the OS (see the other discussion on some potential bug regarding the Extern section)
