Any idea why this might happen? Been playing about with midi preferences but every time I do a filter sweep on the hardware, as soon as I sweep it all the way down playback stops in ableton. It seems like it is sending a message to to do this. Even if I switch off Local in hardware it still stops the track from playing. This is driving me crazy. Any help is really appreciated.

I would suggest looking at your preferences on MIDI controller settings in Ableton... Setting Local Off (on your Nord Rack...?) wouldn't make any difference as it'll still be outputting.
Does Ableton allow you to view incoming MIDI data?

I can't see what is wrong but I am relatively inexperienced in using hardware with ableton. Now when I move the filters the notes just hang and freeze immediately and I have to switch the panic button to unfreeze. I am using it with the new mystery island plug in for Nord 2 but still same problems... attached pics if that helps. Midi USB uno is midi to USB converter leads which connect Nord Rack 2 up to my iMac. Running ableton 9 suite. Using SL61 mk2 as the controller. Anything obvious on the pics that I have done?

What's the Remote SL under Control Surface?
Try changing that to none.

That is the Novation SL61 but I will give it a go...

This had no effect as soon as I have (C.ON) on the Nord (which seems to mean it sends out midi info to ableton for all the knobs) it just freezes and hangs immediately.

I don't know enough about Ableton to help you there, but I still think it must be responding to MIDI CCs.
Try simplifying your setup to isolate the issue. (I don't know what Mystery Island is...)
