Newbie - how do you download the samples to the keyboard

Postby Snets » 10 Oct 2017, 00:22

I've connected my Electro 5D to the computer - I've downloaded the sample to "Sample Library" - how do I get it to the instrument in a location I can find. Off to the side is says "Not used by any programs" beside the sample I chose. I'm sorry if this is a basic question but I've been a Motif guy forever and the basic logic of the Nord is eluding me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to use that sample in a Program, loading it into the Sample memory just makes it available but does nit create any associate Program, this is similar to what happens on the Motif you load a "waveform" to the RAM/Flash but then you need to create at leaste one Voice that uses it; read the manual carefully particularly the Sample synth section.

I have the manual - it is fairly useless and there doesn't appear to be a YouTube video explaining how to do it - that's why I put it up here but thanks for replying I have no idea whatever how to get this sample in - I never had to put anything into my Motif because it already had everything. I really like this keyboard but figuring it out has been a challenge. I need a fiddle sound for some country songs (non-vibrato) and a better accordion than what is on there but I haven't been able to crack the code.

Start here then to understand Nord Sound Manager and difference beteen Programs, Bundles, Samples,.. http://www.nordkeyboards.com/software-t ... nd-manager , tutorial videos at the bottom of the page.

Then if you want to learn about custom samples creation go here http://www.nordkeyboards.com/software-t ... ple-editor. (Tutorial video there too)

Then read again what I wrote: you need to use the sample you want in a Program, if you want to hear it; downloading it to the NE5 Sample memory alone does nothing but making it available to Programs, but you still need to explicitly use it i.e. Create a Program where Sample synth is active and that sample is selected (and then of curse store that Program)

I guess why I don't know and what I don't see explained anywhere - is once you have the sound in the Sample Library - how do you get it to the keyboard - or attach it to a "program" - it doesn't seem to explain that - or if it does I'm an idiot and don't see it

What does it mean that you "have the sound in the Sample Library"?
You have it dowloaded from website to your PC or also downloaded, via Nord Sound Manager, to the NE5?

So, trying to start from scratch, the steps are:

- download the desired sample from Nord Sample Library (Website) to your PC
- use Nord Sound Manager to "send" it to the NE5 (see tutorial video about that, if any doubt how to do it)
- create a Program on NE5, activate Sample Synth and select that sample

I don't think I can be clearer than that...
(And if you didn't take the time yer to watch the NSM tutorials, please do it, they probably help more that writings on a forum)

I've watched them - I'm sorry I just don't get it - I successfully got the sample downloaded under the sample tab so that I can see it on the computer list - but it says it's not associated with a program. I've gone through every single sound on the Electro and I don't see it there anywhere. I guess I'm hopeless - thanks for trying.

No you are not, maybe now I get where the misunderstanding is: if the Sample is shown there then you are done with the PC, because you cannot create a Program from Nord Sound Manager, you can only do it on the NE5 (directly on the keyboard). NSM is just a librarian, not an editor.

Try... forget the PC, create a new Program on the NE5 (or use a Live buffer) activate the Synth on Upper and then select that sample with the encoder ;-)

The Nord Electro has three sound engines - organ, piano, and synth.

Every program will ALWAYS have all three — even if you're only hearing the organ. That just means that the piano and synth aren't switched on. They're still there, and their settings are saved as part of the program.

The organ sound is generated directly in the keyboard.

The piano engine and the sample synth engine each have dedicated memory areas that you can fill with pianos and samples, respectively. These memory areas are just the reservoir of sound resources that are in the keyboard and CAN be used in a program. Just because they are on there doesn't mean that any program is actually using them, any more than the presence of cardamon in your spice rack necessarily means that any meal you've ever cooked in that kitchen actually had to contain it.

The piano engine accesses the pianos section of the internal memory. It is activated by switching it on (assigning it to a part in the Program section) and selecting one of the pianos that has been uploaded into the internal memory of the device.

The sample synth engine accesses the sample section. It is activated by switching it on and selecting a sample from the internal memory.

SOOOO….

if you've got a new sample that you've uploaded into the nord and want to play, you have to

— find a program — any program — that you don't need and are willing to overwrite

— switch OFF the organ and piano engines in the Program section of the front panel.

— switch ON the synth engine.

— in the sample synth section, turn the dial until you have selected the sample you want to play.

Does that help?
