Help needed: Nord sound manager won't open, already running?

Postby Midinotes » 18 Jan 2014, 15:28

I'm using a Mac (Mavericks) and everytime I try to open Nord Sound Manager from the dock, its pops up a message saying 'Nord Sound Manager is already running'. Clearly it isn't as I've turned off and on my computer, ensured programs would not reopen and the Nord Sound Manager icon isn't showing a glow light below it. I've even checked the force quit option and it's not showing in there!
Any ideas on what to do? I am unable to open the program.

Thanks
Simon

Mavericks is messed up from what I've seen - I'm definitely not updating until Apple comes out with a new OS. In the mean time, try checking for a similar problem, maybe someone else has tried opening a different app and had this happen to them.

Either that or contact Apple support, I don't think it has much to do with the Sound Manager, just more-so the crappy OS.

Mavericks has been pretty ok for me to date, other than Mail which is a bit flaky. However Logic Studio runs smoothly and overall I'm pleased.
Not sure if this issue is related to Mavericks, I find Nord Sound Manager on the Mac very flaky, there's rarely a time that goes without it crashing whilst changing samples.
I guess a reinstall is the only solution. I'm suspecting it might have had something to do with the intermittent power cuts last night that happened whilst my computer was running.

The Sound Manager is pretty flaky. I've once or twice had to restart the Mac before it would work, but then it worked pretty flawlessly.

Mavericks has otherwise been pretty solid for me.

Ok this is driving me crazy. I uninstalled Nord Sound Manager (deleted the app using an appcleaner so as to include the preferences). I rebooted the mac, downloaded and reinstalled Nord Sound Manager latest version from the website.

As soon as I try and run the program, I get the same message "Nord sound manager is already running"! And then it closes.

I've put in a support query to Nord, but I wonder if anyone else knows how to completely fully uninstall Nord Sound manager from Mac OSX? I can only assume that somewhere there is a prefs file or something that hasn't been removed.

Driving me nuts as I can no longer change the sounds in my Nord Electro 4D.

Regards
Simon

Has anybody identified a solution yet. I'm getting nowhere. I really need to to rearrange my piano library before my next gig at the end of the month but every time I attempt to open the 'Nord Sound Manager' a box pops up saying that it is already running. Like the other user here, I have trained reinstalling the programme, I have tried rebooting the system and I have tried force quite but it's not in the list except when the pop window appears, in which case it still doesn't solve the problem.

I have a Nord Stage 2 88 with latest OS
I have a Mac book air with OS X Yosemite with latest update.

Please help otherwise I won't have the salon piano for my boogywoogy number (end of the world) but still I'd like to get my set list in order.

PS Anybody got the thunder crash fro pm the first bar of 'Brothers in Arms'.

Cheers
Viva la Nord

Also if I get the a second hand C2 can I get the awsom keyboard contact click I've heard on the C2D?

Love and good playing...

Hi

First off, let's not hijack this thread and turn it into a rant against Apple or a particular OSX flavour - there's plenty of crap out there on the internet without filling up this forum and wasting all our time ;-)
For what it's worth, I use Mavericks and have had no issues.

It sounds like you have a process running in the background, so try this:

- Go to spotlight (magnifying glass in top right!) and type the green text below:
Code: Select all
terminal

- In the terminal window that pops up, type:
Code: Select all
ps -ax | grep Nord
*note that thing in the middle is a 'pipe' symbol, press SHIFT + \ to get it

- This should give you the process IDs of any running Nord programs. Mine looks like this:
Code: Select all
4751 ??         0:00.44 /Applications/Nord Sound Manager v6.52.app/Contents/MacOS/Nord Sound Manager -psn_0_1032444

- The first number is the process ID - 4751 in my case, yours will be different.
- Type
Code: Select all
kill 4751
(except change 4751 for your own process ID. Now try launching it

Also, try unplugging the USB, launching the NSM, then plugging in the USB cable

Thanks for your help but this process didn't work.

I've been in touch with Nord technical support who, although fantastic in corresponding quickly to my query, have not yet found a solution.
They are aware of the problem that some Mac NSM users are having and Nord HQ say they will have a fix by the next product update. They have asked me to let them know if your solution works. I'll let them know.

Thanks for you help.

The NSM places a PID-file in the user’s Home directory, named "Nord Sound Manager-user name”. The PID file is a “Process Identification” file, which is used by the computer to tell other applications what process ID a particular program or script is using. This should be removed once an application is quit, but we have a feeling that doesn’t happen in these rare cases.

1. The Home folder can be located by opening Finder and then within the “Go” menu choosing “Home”.

[The Home folder is root for a lot of user directories such as Documents, Music etc.]

2. Within this folder there should, as mentioned, also be a file named "Nord Sound Manager-user name”, [/list]

3.Move this file to the trash.

I take it this was the response from Clavia - deleting that PID file worked I assume? Congrats!
