considering my first Nord - electro/piano

Postby elare » 10 May 2017, 21:16

Hello everybody

I'm looking forward into investing into a Nord. I read and watched quite a lot about the different types and it seems that my decision will come down between a "electro" and a "piano" type. I started playing piano about 3 years ago, but coming from a jazz guitar background.
I really dig the different piano sounds the Nord offers , but also I am especially into the electro piano sounds like the rhodes, wurlitzer, etc. or the clavinet sounds. The synth/ sample bank is just a nice addition, but the focus is more on the electric piano/ clavs/ vintage/ etc. sounds. I am still quite uncertain about the organ section. It's a big plus for me, as i could really see myself enjoying it and using it often, if i have the possibility (nord electro/ stage).

My big question is about those electric piano/ clavs/ vintage/ etc. sounds. Are those sounds the exact same on the Nord electro 5 HP as they are on the Nord piano 3? Or is there the slightest difference? Are there any advantages on the "piano" or on the "electro" besides for example the weight?
I've recognized, that there are some additional modeling options on the electro, which would be nice.

Also, does anybody have experience with the weighted keys on a Nord electro 5 HP?
It's quite important for me to have some sort of weighted keys, not like a organ or a Nord electro 5 D, it's just a individual thing for me, which i prefer.

There is a lot of uncertainty and confusion with those two models and i really hope you can help me. Plus at the moment i don't have the chance to go out and play the different models, that's why i need your help.

Cheers and thank you for your responses.

You might want to read this related thread:

My take on this is that the two biggest differences are:
1. The Nord Piano 3 has the triple sensor keybed (none of the Electro 5 models have this)
2. The Nord Electro 5 HP has that great organ sound. The Nord Piano 3 does not, and will never come close.

Harmonizer basically sums it up. Mainly I'd add that the Nord Piano 3's HA action feels very different from the weighted Electro's HP action, even though they are both hammer actions (for reasons having nothing to do with the triple sensor), and most people agree the HA feels better. Also, the NP has the triple pedal which includes the "half pedaling" function. So while the piano *sounds* are identical between the two keyboards, they don't "play" identically.

Yep, what they said.

All sounds are identical where they exist on both boards (pianos, samples, etc.)
Nord Piano 3 has a somewhat different feel, but the HP is certainly workable for AP and DP work.
And the Nord Piano 3 has 88 keys which is useful for people like me who run out of keys when they forget they're playing on a 76.

I play with a Nord Piano 2 (weighted) underneath and a Nord Electro 4D above (unweighted) so I can play different parts on different keybeds. This approach also lets me easily play -- for example -- APs on the verses, and organs on the chorus without getting into keyboard splits and all that.

Best of luck!
I think I have gear issues ....
