Chuck mentioned the Casio PX-5s. Hell of a board for the money. GREAT-feeling keys. I LOVE mine. The Rhodes are VERY believable, especially custom patches people have created for others to download. The pianos are in general, lacking... but the Rhodes and Wurlys are good-- and the synth stuff is HELLA powerful on that board. Combine that with an Electro 5D61... decent investment, but... whoa!

themixtape wrote:Chuck mentioned the Casio PX-5s. Hell of a board for the money.

PX5S is a great board for the money, and the size and travel weight, but honestly, I would not recommend it in this situation. This is something that will be made available for other musicians to play, so I think ease of use should be a high priority. Since there are used Nords available in budget, I'd rather go that way. If he wants to look at other non-Nord options, though, other "fun and easy" boards that come to mind could be the VR09 that cphollis mentioned, or a Korg SV1.

ETA: The OP did say "I mainly enjoy the organs and electric pianos sounds, but for sure some good acoustic piano sounds would be handy, and for sure some synths would not bother." So keeping the list of priorities in mind (organ/EP first, piano second, synths last), Casio and SV1 aren't strong choices for organ. The biggest weakness of the Nord would be synth, but it's a lesser priority.

Guys I just want you all to know that I have been reading you with attention and interest. I made an offer to a guy for a second hand electro 5 sw (around 1300). It seems to me that what Tasten-Bert said (and other confirmed) was prolly the best option. Buying after another weighted keyboard is not difficult and kinda cheap.

Nice! And yes, pretty much any weighted action board will make for a decent additional controller, as long as it has a standard 5-pin DIN MIDI Out jack, and you should be able to get something used pretty cheaply. Something like a Yamaha P85, P95, P35 or a Casio PX-x00, x10, x20, 3xx should do.

Hola,

Key action depends on you or whoever is going to play. If you have a music store by you go and try playing with weighted Keys. To see if you like the heavy feel. They're good for hitting strict Piano sounds but feel kind of weird on synth sounds. I however wish I had gotten the HD version for my Electro. I hate the feel of the waterfall keys too springy for me that is.

Nord wise this is what Nord is "High Quality Piano's and Organs and decent everything else". Since I've honestly played just about every keyboard over the years I've learned that every board has it's own personality/purpose (man I feel old saying that). The Nord is however a Piano players keyboard. To appreciate it you really have to understand what Nord's giving you. Stage wise it's your best friend simple solid and almost unscrewupable (yeah I made that word up and it's cool). I like that it's easy to jump into and straight forward like throw out your instruction manual straight forward. Makes it feel more like an instrument and not something you spend your time programing over playing. It sounds heavenly.

The Piano's Sound extremely authentic even after playing a real Grand Piano,Baby and Upright Piano I'm like yeah this Nord sure is hitting the spot but... it's because of that it's a Keyboard you have to appreciate otherwise really it's a waste. Do you need a piano that sounds that authentic just to waste it on rehearsals? If it's just going to stay in a practice room you can get a Casio, Kawaii, or Roland digital piano upright and save yourself a lot of money. Check out the Kawaii ES110 or the Casio Privia. Those are good rehearsal room choices. In a recording or on stage you need the authenticity but if you're not doing that a cheaper keyboard with quality sounds can save you some money and do the same job.

If you have to have something that's rounded and you have 1500 or so I'd really have to say to check out the Yamaha MOXF8. It's an 88 Key weighted with the glamorous Motif sounds. Has some really nice Japanese Piano's on it and is good for a lot of sounds plus it's expandable and you can add in sounds that yamaha offers. That seems to be the new keyboard of choice for budget studios, composers and musicians.

Goodluck.

I also find the waterfall a bit too heavily sprung for my tastes, less than ideal as a semi-weighted board, but the weighted HP Electro option is also less than ideal as a weighted board, so there is some compromise no mater which way you go. That said, I don't know which Electro you have, but I found piano to be more playable on my E5D SW than I did on my earlier Electro 3 or Nord Stage 2 SWs, they do appear to have made some improvement.

The OP said, "I mainly enjoy the organs and electric pianos sounds, but for sure some good acoustic piano sounds would be handy, and for sure some synths would not bother." With organ as a priority, the Kawai/Casio would be weak choices.

MOXF8 is an excellent board, but also, not among the strongest for organs (and also not the simplest to find your way around if you're going to have other players drop in to jam, which it sounds like is part of the goal here).

ketar wrote:Buying after another weighted keyboard is not difficult and kinda cheap.

Assuming you do get that E5D, kind of picking up from the above, if you hold out until you can afford a weighted board that is not quite so cheap, there are some still not-so-expensive boards that I think would complement an Electro very well, not only in terms of giving you a weighted action to play the Nord from, but in having complementary sounds/features of their own. That MOXF8 is great, but you could also look at the cheaper and simpler MX88. I'd also look at the new Kurzweil SP6. In Casio, the PX560 (or somewhat less capable PX360) are simpler than the PX5S. Roland has the FA08 and DS88. All of these will also give you the pitch and mod controls for synth work that you don't have on the Nord, except the PX360 which doesn't have a mod wheel.

Hey, if you can spring for a used Nord Electro 5, you'll have the killer board that the people will want to play. I would. Pianos and organs? Amazing. Plus enough amazing samples to keep it interesting.

Especially if you have decent amplification. Total ear candy. Figure out the weighted board thing later.
I think I have gear issues ....

Ketar, have you already bought a NE5D? If not: maybe wait a bit, prices could drop after the announcement of a new NE6 at NAMM fair.

I did. 1200 euros. 1 year old, warranty still active. Looks like new: a screaming deal, I'd say.
I am so happy.

I'll keep in mind suggestions for others weighted boards (like the models pointed by anotherscott).
But for now this seems to have all I rly need, plus the simplicity of controls, which is so important for me (given that I do not want and need to plunge deeply in the keyboards world).

Having something that sounds good on rehearsals doesn't seems a waste to me. At the opposite. I like to enjoy any music moment life is giving me. And good sounds are inspiring...

You are all invited to play it (with me) :) My music room seems to be promising and this is the very first time in my life I have one, so I feel very rich now.

Congratulations, my dear! You sound very happy right now, I could read your words over and over again. And I take your invitation for granted. Many years ago I lived in Italy for some years, nelle Marche, provincia Macerata. So I still go there often. And you, where are you located? Have a good time. PS: I love my NE5D 61 as well. Tanti saluti
