Analog or Virtual Analog

Postby synthguy1 » 05 Feb 2017, 06:49

Hello
1st time user. A quick question:
On my Stage 2 HA-88, if I select a 'Sawtooth' waveform on the Synth section of the Stage 2 - is it an analog generated sawtooth oscillator creating said waveform, or, is it a "Virtual Analog" generated waveform? The Nord blurb says 'Classic Analog Oscillators" and various reviews say 'Virtual Analog Synthesizer', so I'm a bit confused on this particular issue.
When it comes to Analog Synthesis, I use a pair of Memorymoog Synths, a Moog Sub 37, and Taurus 1 bass pedals, so I'm all about analog synth tones, but my Stage 2 synths are frickin' killer if I tweak 'em just right and I'd hate to be wrong saying, "No, no! That was analog - coming off the Stage 2; I wasn't using Moog stuff for that!"
Does anyone out there know the answer to my question?

Cheers!

Nord invented the first virtual analog synthesizer with the Noord Lead (If it wasn't really the first one, at least they have been credited with it...), so, in the stage 2 they use their knowledge to put a virtual analog in the stage 2. But it's damn good at pure "analog" sound....I have never worried about it with my stage 2 but I can tell you, I always have the same feeling when I play the Nord lead 2X, different from my Prophet 08 or Matrix 1000 but for me no difference....

There is nothing analog about the Nord Stage except the DACs at the output stage.

Did you say you have a PAIR of Memorymoogs?

A show I produced and performed in. 4 channel discreet quadraphonic. I do the 'Any Color You Like' synth solo using the MM+ I bought in 1983.

That's rather splendid! What year was your LAMM retrofit?

I really like your show, nice sound with the MM and LAMM but as you noticed, Nord virtual synthesis is close to the real things...

For that show I was using a Nord Stage 76 which has since been updated to the Stage 2 88. The LAMM was purchased in 1999 direct from Germany - cost me over $10,000.00 Canadian at the time with shipping, tax, brokerage fees, yada, yada, yada... The actual price was was 4,200.00 Euro + shipping and it came in a beautiful hard shell road case. I only mention this because last year I contacted Rudi Linhardt inquiring as to 'LAMM'ing my MM+ and he quoted 8,200.00 Euro! A little out of my particular financial ball park. Too bad for me!
My Nord Stage was wonderful and now with the 88NS2 it's even more wonderful. Bit of a drag though - they would both crap out when being controlled by an external sequencer (I use Korg Kronos and/or Ensoniq TS-12) unless you disable 'control change'. Seems Nord never went super MIDI 'deep' with the Stages. Tough s***, I work around it - nothing like the Stage or S2 for performance, or sound. I can tweak the synth section for 'death tones from hell' and I don't need to worry about dragging a fragile Memorymoog to a crappy gig. In the studio I'll use everything I own, and then some. Whatever winds your clock! so to speak! That show, I also had a pair of Prophet '08's which were awesome - since sold, but this spring I'm grabbing a Prophet '08 rev 2. This, I'll be able to afford as the price has dropped considerably since I purchased the '08's when they first came out.
Anyway, Cheers, all!
