Win7 software for easy recording

Postby NordFan » 24 Jul 2011, 19:38

Hi,

I want to start recording some simple stuff I play on my NS2. I already bought a cheap (to start with) Behringer USB interface.
But what software for Win7 can I use for this purpose? I also got a pretty Vst library. It would be nice if I could use them but it's necessary.

I'm planning to buy a Macbook Pro and Logic but for the time being I want something simple on my Win7 pc.

Thank you so much!!

Hello NordFan,
Audacity is a great audio recording software for Windows "including W7".
Everything that I've recorded and posted to the forum has been recorded with it.
Audacity also records VSTi s.
The MacBook Pro will be a great choice, and should come with GarageBand pre-installed.
GarageBand is a very powerful music production suite that includes to ability to record audio and MIDI.

Cheers, Hanon

Thanks so much Hanon!

Audacity is superb! I already managed to make a quick recording (of Child in Time, see the topic in the NS2 patches threads).

I always use MAGIX Music Maker, a great multi-track recording software for Windows, with a lot of functions, effects, vsts,... Unfortunately you have to pay for it (...or maybe not... ), but you can also try it first.

Reaper is a good alternative if you want more DAW like features including VSTis etc.
http://www.reaper.fm/download.php
And it is 40 $, free one month to tryout.
Plus its available for WIN and MacOS.

Perhaps I come a bit late.

But anyway, I truly support Johannes. REAPER is superb, a little secret: demo doesn't truly expire and is fully functional. So if you do not feel like you use it enough to buy it I guess its ok. But if you end up using it a lot or like it you must buy it!! Plus 50 USD is pretty much close to free for what you are getting. I have used Cubase, Tracktion and even yes, Audacity. And trust me REAPER does a much better job at everything!!

Audacity is great, do not mistake me. But it is great for a lightweight and simple sound recorder it is not a fully fledged DAW, which REAPER is.

+1 for Audacity : very simple, I use it when I just want to record or edit audio. I find it complementary with Ableton.

and

+1 for reaper too, with its "personnal use licence" it's great value for money, but it's a bit too complex for me, so I prefer Ableton live.
