stage monitors

Postby damasp » 06 Feb 2017, 20:47

Still looking for stage monitors. I am now looking at a pair of Alto Professional Truesonic TS210 (10"). They seem to have some good reviews and much more affordable at $249 ea.

Are any of you using these? Any comments?

my other alternative is still the EV ZX A1 90 or QSC K8, which are more. I was hoping someone out there had some feedback. Both being lightweight

I bought 2 and I like them. They have 2 inputs (combi TS and XLR plugs) and 1 XLR "link" output which you could connect to other amped speakers or to a mixer input (to avoid a DI box). However the gain knobs affect the output level of the link XLR output so I decided to also get a stereo DI box (I feed the TS210 from the "link" output of the DI box) and send the DI box XLR output to the console (so I am not using the link output). That way I can change the volume of the monitors without affecting the level going to the mixer. There is a traditional ground lift switch and a "contour" switch that boosts bass and treble frequencies ("smile" eq curve). Plenty of bass and lightweight. They can be put on a pole, standing or angled on their side. They also have a silent power switch, so you do not hear a bang! in the speakers each time when switching on or off. Best to try them first to make sure you know what you are getting.

Thanks Mr. G! Good report. I like what I've read about them. The stores by me don't have them on display and seem to carry the 12s and 15s. These would be nice to have when the stage is small also. I have a stereo di box and that setup would be nice. I could just bring my Nord the 2 speakers and leave the mixer behind.

Seriously considering these.

And since you have 2 inputs, really you could have 2 stereo kbds connected to the speakers.

yes. that is a good option. I like that there weight is 22lbs also. I read some reviews saying that the speakers were easily blown, which bothers me. Some say they were pushing them too hard though and not paying attention to gain staging. I do realize that a $249 speaker may not use the same materials as a $649 speaker. Also those users may have been DJs that use them a lot at high volumes.

I bought my EV ELX11Ps a few years ago and they are dependable, affordable and good sound quality. Much cheaper than some of the alternatives. I just don't want lug them around, unless I need the power.

It might be more than you want to spend, but i'm now using the CPS SSv3 for both stage monitoring as well as stage sound for smaller gigs. It take a while to dial it in, but once you do -- magic!

I decided to go with a pair of the Alto Ts210 (10" models). I think they sound pretty good. At this point I can't justify the pricey models. The QSC k8 would probably been my choice if I was playing out more. Getting older and living in a 3 floor walkup was another deciding factor. The Altos are only 22lbs as compared to my EV which are 38lbs each. I heard someone using a spacestion and it sound very good. I think it's up around 40lbs or so.

Unfortunately my equipment decisions revolve aound weight and $. An Electro and a Casio Px-5s are managable also.
