My Amp sounds crap...

Postby TheCapMan » 04 Jan 2011, 20:26

Hi,
I have my nord for 2 weeks now but it will not sound good with my amp :(
I have bought the amp last year for cheap money (http://www.phonic.com/en/sound-ambassador-120.html)
I connected my nord stage ex in the line in of the box. and have the treble on 1 o clock an the bass on 11o clock.
But it wont sound good... it rattles and clanks.
(I connected my mp3 player to it and it works very well)

I dont want to have a amp to fill a hall or something ! Just for my small room...
Which amp/Speakers can you suggest?

Thanks :D

I'm not familiar with these amplifiers but it might be that the output level from your Nord's too high, maybe try to turn the master on the Nord a bit down then compensate with turning up on the speakers.

Hey subwoofed,

Mh I dont think this is the problem.
Its simply a mechanical rattling.
The membrane is rattling whether the outputlevel is high or low.
I know the Box is crap but which amps have you guys in the forum?
I need an amp for bigger rooms and smaller halls. (this dimension: http://www.museenkoeln.de/_medien/mlk/Kino_500.jpg)
but also for my small flat so what can you recommend?

PS: Bit confused cause there are speakers for 200€ but also for 2000€... o.O

120W on that speaker is not likely to sound that "loud" with a Stage through it (I don't think it's rms), so I wouldn't be surprised if nicely compressed audio sounded OK and fairly loud, whilst raw piano started to drive the speaker quite hard (although if it's really happening at low volume, something is wrong).

My Stage Classic has never sounded good in mono for piano, even with the mono mode selected (not too bad on organ/synth though).

If the house engineer puts me through the PA in mono, I have been known to beg him to reconsider (and if I were more important than I am, I'd probably throw an Elton and leave!). The difference is huge.

I dumped my trusty mono set up and went for a Yamaha Stagepas 500 which I swear by for small venues (or as foldback in larger ones), and it fits in the car and in the house with ease (and I mean using it in the house too, not just storing it).

If I needed anything bigger I wouldn't be expecting (or expected) to take it with me - it would be the band PA, the house PA or a rented PA.

Works for me.

As with anything you buy, you can always spend more, and often spend less. I usually research and go for the "safe" bit in the middle !
