K & M keyboard stand

Post by damasp »

I'm thinking of a K&M stand, either the 18880 or the 18810 omega for gigs and weekly practice. I play with one keyboard mostly, but use another on certain gigs. If stacking the keyboards, I like them to be close together and I always play seated. I've seen user pictures of the 18880 model with the additional stacking arms getting the boards close together. Is the Omega model able to do the same or is there a big gap between the two stacked boards?

Also wondering, If you use a 18880 stand, how is it holding up? I know they are lightweight aluminum.
Thanks!

I used to use the K&Ms you mention, but no longer.

These days, it's a Spider Pro, or the newer Brazilian Stay stands. Pros: lighter, simpler, smaller, and better looking on stage. Cons: can get slightly wobbly when you're pounding at the edges. Mildly annoying, nothing will fall though.

A red Stay stand w/matching Nords is certainly sexy on stage, and nothing is lighter.

Maybe for you?

I've owned the 18880 for several years now. I used it mostly for a single keyboard, but do occasionally play with two keyboards. Like you, I like my keys close together, and I play seated. I built my own 2nd tier for the 18880 to get the instruments really close together. Here are a few pictures to show how it looks:

(don't mind the wires in the last pic. This was a rehearsal and I was less than neat.)

The concept is modeled after the old Invisible Stand. I still own one, but it's a bit too tall for seated playing.

So far the 18880 has held up well. I use it once or twice weekly. It does require that you inspect/tighten the bolts periodically.

Thanks guys for your replies and info. I'll read those other posts. Hey Mike, your stand modification is interesting and I like how close the boards are. I think I would want the top keyboard to be a bit more forward though.

I think someone mentioned the stacker bars could be flipped around for a close fit. I see there are two different stacker bar models. I'm not sure what the difference is though.

The baby spider looks good also.

I almost bought the K & M 18800 stand, but I just couldn't make up mind. I think I'll wait on getting a new stand with stacker capabilities. The omega is a bit too heavy and doesn't seem as compact. Not totally sold on the 18800 either. I've decided to try to use just my electro 3 for most gigs. My current singe stand doesnt have much of a selection of positions and I've been using a huge eye screw and wingnut to keep it working.

I decided to get a K&M single stand with small increments of height options.
K&m 18930 X Keyboard Stand W/ Quick Release Black 18930.070.55 Konig & Meyer... $69 on Amazon.

I'll think about another double stand at another time. Thanks again for the input and links, etc. I'll revisit the issue further down the road.
I'm thinking of getting a drummer's throne now. Something adjustable and comfortable. I've seen some players using them.

I like your home made 2nd tier, it looks pretty tidy and solid. Right now I have a Yamaha CP300 as my main keyboard, it's flat top is ideal for putting synths directly on top but I'm trading it in for a Nord Stage 3 soon, so I'm thinking about making something similar myself.

Few questions:

How is it attached to the stand?

I assume it's made out of MDF/Ply?

Hi, yes it's made from some scrap plywood I had around, I think A/B grade, 3/4" (1.7cm) thick.

Here's a picture of the tiers outside the stand:

Image

As you can see, there is a part that extends into the tube of the stand, approximately 9.5cm. The plywood was not quite thick enough to fill in the width of the stand, so I had to add shims.

I first created a paper template to fit how I wanted the keyboards placed on the stand. The most specific part is the height of the tier, as you would need to clear the lower keyboard appropriately. There is also a very slight angle to the tier, I think 6 degrees.

In order to keep the top tier from sliding forward, I cut up a few of those gummy pads you buy to keep your cell phone from sliding off your car's dashboard. I just cut them to fit and stuck them on - they're sticky enough that they don't require glue. Cheap and easy to replace.

I don't always go out with two keyboards, and it's nice to have this as a quick solution when I need it.

I'm glad you like it.

I ordered the 18890 (? I think) from Thomann.de. $230.61 with shipping. That includes the 2nd tier addon as well.
