Desktop EQ?

Postby lawman » 06 Sep 2017, 05:37

Does anyone know of a good 6-12 band desktop EQ that is under $300? Rolls and Behringer each make one in the $80-120 range, but I have reservations about each. I read one review that called the Rolls unit "junk," and I've heard too many negative real-life stories about Behringer gear. Mackey makes a fairly small mixer with 9(?) EQ bands, but the looseness of the larger volume sliders makes me uneasy. I'm running an NP3 and Hammond Xk-3c - the 3-band EQ on the NP3 isn't detailed enough and the Hammond has only one "Tone" control. I don't want a rack unit, just something that can set on the floor next to my small Yamaha mixer and Radial Duplex DI. Any suggestions?

I would go for the Boss GE-7. Though it's dedicated to guitars it should work for the keyboard as well. Every shop should have it on stock, try it.

Considering that synth and piano's range extends much lower than guitar's, staying on the same idea of a stompbox I would rather go for its brother GB-7 which is designed for Bass whose range is as extended.

In the past Boss also had some nice half-rack graphice equalizers, such as the GE21 or RGE10, but they are no longer produced.

Thanks, Eumel and Maxpiano. I should have mentioned that both of my instruments are stereo, so I'm looking for a stereo EQ, whereas both of the current-production Boss units you mentioned appear to be mono. The idea of a half-rack unit is intriguing, though, and I'll look into that as well. I realize that even with a stereo unit such as the Rolls I'll need one for my NP3 and possibly a second for my Hammond Xk-3c.

Maybe we didn't ask you the question we should have: why do you need such a detailed equalization for your keyboards? What's the problem you want to address? Maybe there are other causes and solutions...

Thanks for asking, maxpiano! I'm running my NP3 through my new pair of TT08-A's in a 12' x 16' room with hardwood floors, hard plaster walls, very little hanging art, and lots of furniture (desk, credenza, four shelving/file cabinet units, and printer table). (I've temporarily decommissioned my Xk-3c until my new 2nd-tier keyboard stand extension arrives, and I'm uncertain what further issues I may have then.) I thought I would have a problem with the high end, but instead the room is boomy with bass. Cutting the bass on the NP3's EQ helps, but the wide bandwidth of the 3-band EQ sweeps a lot of good out with the bad. I'm thinking that with a 6-12 band EQ I could be more surgical in cutting only the guilty frequencies. I don't need or want 31 bands. The old Boss half-rack units you mentioned look pretty good, but I'm not interested in used gear. Furthermore, it appears that the Rolls unit I was looking at has also been discontinued. Now I'll look for another half-rack unit, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

You really can't do anything surgical with a small graphic EQ. Even a 31 band graphic is pretty crude. You need a parametric to do anything of significant value, but quite honestly your really just wasting money.

You can't fix a room sonically with equalization. You have to fix the room.

Yes, you have to fix the room, Primacoustic London kit 8, I have two of them in my studio. The room is 3,50 by 2,40 m and it has helped a lot to keep the room clean and unboomy. The EQ isn't going to do anything...
